I have a Macintosh SE and a Macintosh LC.
Can either of these run any 68k version of Unix?

i'm pretty sure you need a PMMU which the SE ain't got and the LC, mos'likely don'gots neither! pro'lly gonna be needin' an '030 which has it on chip. dunno!

Supposedly, MacMinix will run on a Mac Plus. It doesn't run as a full-blown OS, though; it's implemented as a Mac app.

I never got it to run properly at all, but then again, I never tried very hard.

But I can remember my dad's practice running Xenix on a 80286 Wyse PC, so it's definitely possibly to run UNIX on FPU-less systems. After all, UNIX dates back to the early 70's, so why not..?

I have Linux on my Celeron so, I know its possible to run a Unix like OS on a computer without an FPU.

the question isn't FPU's, it's the PMMU or Paged Memory Management Unit.

I do not beleive that there is any way to give an SE one of those, unless you have an upgrade card that takes it to a 68030 w/ FPU.

the LCs don't have them as far as I know.

the lack of the PMMU kills just about ANY Unix possibilities.

now there's a Hack for a IIe card in an LC! is there a golden oldie NIXIE treat for the 6502? there's not much that hasn't been hacked into the IIe architecture, an old command line NIX poppin' up in a window on an LC runnin the Mac OS would be way cool, if the darn card works like the DOS boards that'd be a hotkey to a new window which would still be cool!

how about the DOS cards? that's what i'm planning (hoping) for the 486 in my LC630 hack!

The Celeron certainly has an FPU.

Most modern UNIX implementations pretty much require an FPU; but will settle for emulation (that's how they make them work on 80386 and 486SX systems). However, since many standard UNIX utils require the FPU, it's no picnic running without one.

As with FPU emulation, a PMMU can be emulated in software, or, better put, memory management can be done in software just as well as in hardware, only slower.

hmmmm, okay.
I guess all modern CPUs have FPUs then.

just wanted to pop back in to say it looks like my notion of a 6502'NIX/IIe Card hacked into an LC was only off by a rev or two. i found some 8 bit proc'NIX links you comrades might get a kick out of!

here's a link to my post in the Apple II forum:

now i wonder if a IIgs board will fit in my Laser? maybe i should keep it stock for a bit!

I've successfully gotten MacMinix to run on my LC I (in fact, i'm running it now).

But as for a "true" Unix, I haven't found anything that'll run on a box without a PMMU. Sad.

here's a linux distrib specifically for CPU's w/o a PMMU! (mostly embedded procs, but might be interesting.

Where can I get a copy of MacMinix?
Anyone know where I can download A/UX?
I just bought an LC II yesterday!

You can download A/UX at retromac68k.dyndns.org (login and password: retro, see the thread in 68k News and Stuff). It has everything you need to install A/UX plus native Unix apps.
