Worth buying?

Well, NiCad's that old (Link 1) that have been sitting on the shelf since new will be almost assuredly dead beyond recovery.

But 6 new cases would allow someone to rebuild new looking batteries very cheaply.

Now I'm tempted to buy them.

They wouldn't look new after you'd rebuilt them - remember the cases are ultrasonically welded together.

Personally I'd be afraid of the fact that they may have started leaking by now.

Should I be better off with the second one then? I have a working BTI battery already, but it wouldn't hurt to have a spare.

Batteries that old will most likely need rebuilding and as was mentioned before, you'd have to hack the case apart to get it open and then find some way to hold it together once you put the new cells in. On the bright side, though, when you rebuild a battery you have the chance to replace the low power cells that the OEM uses with higher capacity ones so you get more time between charges.
