You should find it very speedy and useful on iOS 4.

I ended up keeping my 3GS on iOS 6, because I found I liked some of the cosmetic tweaks (and iOS 6 has iMessage, which I like).

I had an iPhone 3GS I used as my daily driver up until a few days ago, when I upgraded to a 5s.

Yeah, I used one for while in 2015, before we switched from AT&T to Verizon (and, since the 3GS never came in a CDMA variant, it's quite obviously unusable; I might get a cheap prepaid Tracfone/T-Mobile plan for it at some point).
