Yesterday I picked up a MDD and some extras for $10. It was one of the dual 1.25 with only 1mb L3 and FW 800. It also came with a couple of cards. One of which was a FW 800 card. Now I'm trying to decide where to go. One project I was wanting to do was add the missing Firewire 800 components to an OS9 bootable MDD. For that I need a surface mount controller chip and a few other things. I can steal them off the card or the motherboard. I'm able to pull the chip but with my limited talent, it's likely a one off thing. So, sacrifice the motherboard or card. I wouldn't be losing a MDD as I have spare early MDD motherboards but only one other FW800 card. I think I may have just talked myself into sacrificing the motherboard for this project.

I tend to fill all the slots and usually have a card or two I have to leave out. Adding built-in FW800 would save me a slot. Plus it'd be an interesting project

If your card has the exact same chip as what Apple used on the FW800 MDDs, then there is a chance it might work. But at the same time - there may be something else they have done that may prevent it from working. Really, I'd either just stick to using the PCI card, or if you absolutely need that PCI slot, get a FW800 mobo.
The card does have the same controller chip but right now I'm leaning toward pulling the chip from the FW800 motherboard.
or switch ROMs so the FW board will boot OS9?
Which chip is the ROM chip?
