What is the DAL extension for?

I have a database extension in my system folder, called DAL-- what software uses this extension? it looks like it was part of system 7.0.1, I am running 7.1.1 now, not sure if I need the DAL extension.

Sorry for the bump, but DAL is in fact Data Access Language, and has nothing to do with legacy video cameras!
