USB card in Mac OS 9.1

then the card is not a usb card that will work with the mac.  Just because it says usb 1 compliant means nothing.  I have 2 usb cards in old beige macs with OS9 and work great.  So if that one does not then you may need a different card.

Like the video cards in old macs they will work minimally because of pre installed drivers, after that extentions and control panels add function.

That card has a USB chipset that generally works fine in Mac OS 9. Mac OS 9.1 requires a later version of USB Adapter Support than 1.4.1.

If you have a working Mac OS 9.1 installer, I'd suggest doing a clean install with the USB card installed. You'll need to back up any applications or documents before doing so as you'll be erasing the drive. If you install Mac OS 9 on a machine without built-in USB and without a USB adapter installed, it doesn't install the USB support software.

I find it amusing that the Ebay description for the item Sinclair bought says "Via chipset", but the card they shipped has a NEC chipset. A card with the Via chipset probably wouldn't work, but that NEC chipset should work as well as any card.

I recently bought two different cards that said "NEC" chipset, but were Via when they arrived, just the opposite of Sinclair's experience.

Then I installed the drivers that showed me in this thread:

I understand that this amounts to make a clean OS installation with USB card installed.

The fact it says usb 2.0 may be the issue.  You got a 50/50 chance.  I have not been able to get any 2.0 cards to work.  Almost all 1.1 cards no problem just not any real luck with the 2.0 even tho it says compatible.

Sinclair, I reviewed the whole thread and I was wondering if you've tried installing the USB card in the other PCI slot. I expect the problem is related to drivers, but it might be worth a try if you haven't already. PCI PowerMacs can be finicky about which card is in what slot sometimes. I also noticed System Profiler is showing three entries for slot B1 in your screenshot. Does anybody recall if that's normal behaviour for USB cards?

Neither it worked :(

The next thing I'll do is rule out that the card is not defective by connecting it to a PC.
Work in PC.

The behavior is the same in either PCI slots.

More ideas?

I also have a PCI card that (I think) I removed from a G4 tower.

I placed it in my Performa 6360, but I'm not sure how to see if it was detected or not. Is there some kind of System Profiler application in Mac OS 9.1?

Thank you

Well isn't this something. I logged on this morning to post about my working, but not working USB 1.1 card and lone behold there's already someone having the same problem as me!

I have pretty much the same problem, the card is detected in system profiler (x4 ports), but does bog all when I insert a USB mouse or USB pen drive.

As far as I know I have the latest USB extensions installed.

2 port , 1.1 cards seem to be best.  All 4 port cards seem to have a controller that the apple usb sprockets would not jive with.

Finding 1.1 cards is the problem now.

Can anyone tell me where I can find the latest USB drivers for 9.1
