Upgrading to 9.2.2 on unsupported PM7300 w/G3 upgrade

Does anyone know how to achieve the upgrade beyond the supported 9.1 on a PowerMac 7300 with a MAXPowr G3 upgrade? I managed to find a copy of OS9 Helper and I tried to use it with the 9.2.1 upgrade smi I downloaded... but it keeps telling me “An error occurred while copying the disk image.”

Can I just drop a working version of the 9.2.2 system folder on top of my 9.1?

I've tried re-downloading a couple of times now.   :(  Still no luck.

I should probably add that the image will mount and passes its self check.

Echoing Macdrone - 9.2.x adds functionality only for running OS 9 in the Classic Mode under OS X.

Apple says the upgrade path is OS 9.1 --> 9.2.1 --> 9.2.2

If you don't use OS X, why?

There is still value for 9.2.1 if you are not using it under classic.

Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_9

Version: 9.2

Improvements: Improved speed and Classic Environment support.

Version: 9.2.1

Improvements: Minor bug fixes.

Now, I cannot see an upgrade to 9.2.2 being of any value, as below:

Improvements: Bug fixes relating to Classic Environment.

Lastly, OS9Forever Does have a guide for it available (http://web.archive.org/web/20120204045014/http://www.os9forever.com/os9helper.html)

As for the solution, have you attempted to find another source for the 9.2.1 SMI?  I believe there are still a few options around, so I would do some searching to find an alternative, such as an abandoned University web page.

Sidenote

Now, there is someone out there slowing working on a Mac OS 9.2.3 with the goal of adding functionality and bug fixing (http://www.os923.com/).  If you plan to test one of the Developer versions out, then you will need to update to 9.2.2 first.
