I just got a PowerBook 3400c off of a member here and when I get it, it will not turn on. I have done dang-near everything I can do to get it working. So far I have done this:
Tested and made sure power adapter puts out 24v
pulled battery (mains) and tried it, ditto with PRAM both on/off the board.
I can get the green LED at the top to stay solid on, or turn off when I hit the reset button at the back by the SCSI port.
Keyboard power button does NOTHING.
I can hear a slight "pop/click" coming from the speakers in the lid. there is no hard drive spin up. I have also tried it with the minimal config, no extra RAM, reseated the power board.
I am unsure, but it seems like the metal can/capacitor on the power board by the trackpad has a slight bulge. it's not very domed, but there is a slight. no leakage though. Not sure what it should look like, but the dome is so slight it could be just a defect in making the cap.
I tried holding down the reset button for 30 seconds.
does the PRAM battery need to be charged to make this work? I have heard conflicting reports between MUST have PRAM, vs. works better with no PRAM than dead PRAM.
it sure seems that this is along the lines of the GLoD that I have heard. I have worked with another 3400c (which my friend has now) but never had this issue.
Btw, did a check, the battery leads that go to the battery to charge it is only putting out 2 volts. is this acceptable without the machine having load/being on? does the machine need to be on to charge the battery? the battery is completely dead. so I will try leaving it plugged in and see what it does, but I could use a bit of help. Kind of rusty with this stuff...
