Thinking of buying an IIfx

Local ad has an IIfx with SuperMac display offered for cheap, otherwise temping but IIfx has only 4Mb RAM, possibly broken FDHD drive (have one extra drive saved up from broken 7100) otherwise running and comes even with new PRAM-batteries. The display is somehow broken however (admit, i don't have space for CRT) blue and green color shows only etc.

Included is also SuperMac Spectrum/8 Series III NuBus-card, 160MB SCSI HD, keyboard and mouse, System 7.1 installed (no disks).

Local pickup only.

Temping for sure. Just the RAM for IIfx is bit hard to come by.

Go for it, being the "best of" Mac II machine, and you should be able to scrounge up another 4MB of RAM for it relatively easily, 8MB is good enough for System 6 or 7.1. The 7100 floppy drive should work, but won't line up in the harness designed for the older-style models - again, worth scrounging for the right part from a donor Mac.

It also serves as a great place to safely store nubus cards :)

I gave away our IIfx years ago, and regretted it (ah nostalgia), but swapped several Macs for another IIfx, basic specs like yours. Since then however, I've looked out for better parts, and spent largely nothing to get it there (8MB, 2GB HD, dual HD floppies).

The IIfx is a tempting machine... however, the special 64-pin SIMMs could be a problem.

About the FD, I believe the 7100 uses the manual inject drive, while the IIfx takes the older auto inject. It may work, but probably the case design will prevent inserting the floppies all the way.

The missing red on the monitor could be something simple -- or not. Check the cables and the card, just in case.

I was thinking the same, can work or not.

I fixed several FD, cleaning the head properly and removing olg grease wil probably bring it back to life.

I'd go for it.

Its finding the IIfx itself for something that isn't stupid money that can be painful. Even with 4 1MB SIMMS in it, you still have 4 open banks. It should be fairly easy to source another set of 1MB SIMMS to make it 8MB. 4MB SIMMS aren't that much more, but finding the 16MB can be painful.

A working floppy should be fairly easy to source. Just find a working SE FDHD and use the floppy drive from it...or an LC I/II/III.

1MB SIMMs (make sure youy get the correct speed not the ones meant for printers) are easy enough to find, the 4MB ones are a bit harder and more expensive. Be prepaired to buy 2 new PRAM batteries at about $5 a piece. The IIfx is a great machine even with 8MB of RAM, both of mine have 32MB and that is more then enough for tasks a 030/40 should do. I recommend dual superdrives (which are getting hard to find in working condition). Just make sure you have the drive shelf and mounting hardware on the unit. Some early IIfx machines had a 5.25" SCSI HD and if you want to use a normal 50 pin 3.5" drive you will need a new mounting sled. Other then that you just need a video card (none built in) and a network card if you need networking other then the built in serial port.

Thanks for the comments. I put an offer for it, let's see what happens.

I happen to have dead Classic around, shouldn't the disk drive work (both have 1.44MB automatic) on IIfx?

The PRAM-batteries have been already changed, not new ones, but working ones atleast.

I have an deal-coocking up for lots of II's of different model, inc.memory and network cards etc. Should have lots of spare parts soon..
