Thank You CompuNurd! SE\30 Alive Again!

A few weeks ago CompuNurd had a SE\30 board for sale that he recapped but could not get it past a grey screen and mouse pointer after a bong. I decided to buy it, it sounds to be in better condition than the one I got, which Shimisa (sp?) and does not bong.

Got it a couple of weeks ago and then I let it sit on a shelf - family emergencies after family emergency. I swear. But today I got a free day to to the swap/repair.

1) The ROM SIMM did not work on my SE\30 board, still Shimisas (sp?). Put it back on his board and swapped boards in the case.

2) His board Bonged, then get 2 high pitched tones and then Death Chimes with a Shimisa Screen. But I was using the RAM he had sent with the board. One or more of his RAM SIMMs as bad, and I was not going to test which one was it. I swapped it with the one from my board (4 X 4MB = 16MB total). Tried it again.

It Bonged but with no Death Chimes! But the RAM Test took a while - LOL! I thought this is the stage he got it at - Grey Screen and Mouse Pointer! But after a couple of minutes - Smiley Mac! And then it booted the Hard Drive!

YES! My SE\30 is alive again!

And thank you CompuNurd for it. He did do a descent job of recapping the board, and it was shiny clean! No flux, no finger prints!  A great job done!

So for now I have to pack up the SE\30 to deal with another family emergency. But at least I got my SE\30 back!

yup i got a SE/30 and a Classic II from compunerd, i can tell that he very much progressed in his soldering once he got to the se/30.

got the Classic II going, was pretty interesting fix but, hey it works now so that is all the matters.   he's got me on a project, and i should be done with it next weekend. waiting on some caps. I'm fresh outta 2200uf caps.

Uni certainly is the guy to tell someone how their soldering job is! Appreciate it very much!

Just a note: The CII wasn't mine, someone else had tried to fix it but I never really got further than removing the caps and cleaning up some glue.

Like I said again and again, recapping a Classic II seems to bring back 90% - 95% of them from the Shimisa Screen Grave! So in you recapping the board, fixed what that guy could not repair. Congrats, and thanks many times CompuNerd! You soldering skills have improved!

classic II is about 60 to 65% ( working from only a re-cap ), and this board here had some pads torn clean off.

what ever you are re-capping. if works except for faint sound… seems like sound is the first to go…  then yeah like 99% chance recap and all work will including sound.

other wise …  the veritcal bars…. Eh…    chances are good she is going to need some more work.  not always… but most likely.

i did notice some super glue built up on some spots as if there was some wires glued etc… oh well i just left the residue, its not hurting antyhing. I've seen worse,

a guy from canada send me a Classic II with almost every pad lifted. that was fun.
