SE/30 Pad (et al) repair

This obviously isn't a 'new' topic.  My previous soldering iron (and I...) ruined the pads (on C12) here.  I'm looking for any advice specifically on that.  Then I have to recap it all (which I've gotten better at since that botched operation), and replace a few of the parts.  I might have to de-socket the video card socket (I don't know if that's how you say that), because part of a toothpick may be stuck in there - though it might not affect the connection, who knows.

Anyway, any advice broadly and then more specifically on the pads - because I was going to try to do that tonight or tomorrow.  The previous suggestions I've gotten were just to solder up to the trace, which is more or less what I'd planned to do.  But I'm not that proficient, so this is going to heavily involve the flux I got and basically scraping solder out into the pad.  How exactly do you connect it to the trace?  Up to or on top of?  (because there's some sort of laminant on top of the trace itself?)  In other words, does it connect laterally or vertically?

I hate to tell you pal but your missing more than a pad on C12 there

The Y1 crystal is missing along with D1 transistor.

The battery holder is also gone............did you remove these?

I don't know if its the picture but allot of your via's look devoid of solder.

What was the condition of the board when you first got it - was there an acid spill there.

The Y1 piezo was killed by the battery acid. Same with D1. Both are replaceable. I removed the battery holder.

you might be fixing that for a long time. Have you tried to power it up? - any results

based on what I have seen of these acid spills you have an uphill battle ahead of you. the acid kills all the connections, the via's..etc etc

There was no result of the initial powerup, but C12, Y1 and D1 were all missing.  The analog board seems to be fine, and (if I'm not misremembering), there was power to both the floppy and hard drives.  However, the screen did not come on.  I was going to recap it and replace the parts.

I should have followed-up, should/can I power it on without Y1 or D1 - i.e. to test it before I buy replacements?

Fairly sure the pad repair is beyond my skill level.  Tried a bit tonight.  I'll have to clean it before/if I try again.

i wouldn't say its anything about skill level with this board... i would just say that working on it might not be healthy for one's sanity... that board is F'ed up man.

w/e - where am i going to find a better most likely irreparable practice board for pad repair... seriously though I tried a lot of stuff... is there any tip you can think of of how to actually get the solder onto - or to stick to the board.  the best i did was like a tiny bit stuck... then i managed to drop a ball, but it would not settle and just dried as a ball.  that might partly have been the flux, which seemed to keep dripping back toward the pads themselves.

if you can clean up the metal then solder will stick... so you can take some flux and some wick,  and with your iron,  rub what ever surfaces that are eaten up,  and maybe those surfaces will come clean.
