SE/30 Ethernet Solutions?

I just recently acquired a Macintosh SE/30 in fantastic condition. I'd love to get it hooked up to my ethernet network and hopefully the internet as well.

I know about the Asante MacCon PDS Ethernet card for the IIsi and SE/30, but can't seem to find one. There's one here on ebay, but waaay out of my price range:

Does anyone here have one for sale? Or know where I could find one? Or know of a comparable solution? My goals are to get online (email, twitter, AIM) and connect to my local network (file sharing, perhaps?)

I'm new to vintage macs, so please bear with me. I'm particularly fond of the SE/30 because it was introduced right after I was born :b&w:

Took me a while to find an ethernet card for my SE, I used to use Localtalk bridge for networking. You can download it from

It's not a very elegant solution though. You could put this in the Trading Post forum, someone here might have one for sale.

an SE/30 is pretty easy to get on the internet without extra hardware or Ethernet.

Install MacTCP and MacPPP on the SE/30

make a cross-over serial cable and connect it to a computer that you want to use as a ppp server.

configure the server to run a login screen with getty

configure the server to run the pppd server.

Then, you can set up a script in MacPPP to log in and initiate a ppp connection with the server. This will serve your TCP/IP connection through the serial port.

You will have a full internet conenction on the SE/30 without ethernet. This is how I get my Se/30 online.

I would consider needing another system to act as a server "extra hardware"

By extra hardware, I meant something you would have to go out and buy. Those SE/30 nic cards are pretty expensive.

Also, many older cheap ISDN or ADSL routers have a serial port and built in PPP server. That would be "extra hardware", but it is a cheap option.

Ok, my SE/30 is retrobrighted, recapped, and fitted with the Maccon ethernet card.

This might be a question for JDW – how do you have it configured? I've got a Time Capsule handing out DHCP and 10/100 ethernet cable. I have a feeling that both of those things will cause issues...

How should I configure MacTCP?

If you are running OS 7.1 or better and have 4MB of RAM or better then download OpenTransport 1.1.1 from Apples website along with 1.1.2 update and you will have DHCP enabled, no messing around with macTCP.
