Scanner + idiot = magic smoke . . .

. . . yep, I just borked the Scanmaker 4 that I snagged today on powerup! Like an idiot, I just plugged it in and powered it up like I did the first one I bought in its original packaging! No problem THAT time, but THIS one let out a loud "CRACK" and the insides filled up w/the dreaded magic smoke . . . I should have known better . . . [:I] ]'>

I ASSuMEd, that this one would act the same as the first, but I never looked at the docs & CD in the Zip-Loc Bag that was lovingly taped to the scanner's lid by the thoughtful person who donated it to the thrift shop. I should have realized that such a person would have locked down the carriage of the scanner . . . [:I] ]'>

Whatever, what's done is done! Now I get to crack that Big@$$ sucker open and see what's inside! [}:)] ]'> [:D] ]'> [;)] ]'>

If MicroTek was HALF as thoughtful as the previous owner, I'll find a fuse or a fusible link inside to idiot-proof this, very expensive for its day, great Scanner! I snagged it mostly for the CD on top and the Plexi (?) Transparency Drawer Platen that were missing from the first one I got from the same thrift. That first one has some really nasty SCSI VOODOO goin' down. I've tried everything but an active termination device to get the "Chain not terminated" banner in SCSI-Probe to stop flashin', including the IIfx Super-Terminator.

Wish me luck!

On second thought . . . don't wake Murphy up, maybe he's snoozin' about now! ::)

Last time I moved my office I dutifully locked my scanner before packing it... and then completely forgot about it. I spent the better part of a day trying to figure out why it wasn't working before remembering to unlock it. Fortunately it didn't explode, but the time wasted was probably worth more than the original cost of the scanner...

And then there's the time I moved a $900 solid ink printer without letting it cool down properly :(

As one who has liberated more than his fair share of magic smoke, I offer condolences and a hearty welcome to the brotherhood. :)

I doubt that a fuse replacement will do the trick. However, with a little luck, it'll turn out to be some fried resistors in series with the drive transistors. Burned-out motor windings are the worst case, but if the engineers were reasonably thoughtful, a stuck carriage shouldn't result in a fried motor. Let us know what you find when you finally open it up.

Thank you very much for the condolences, the hearty welcome into the brotherhood of the magic smoke . . .

and the message of hope! [;)] ]'>

Since I have one of these beasts w/nasty SCSI VODOO and one well & truly borked monster on hand, I'm not all that worried (God & Murphy willing, of course! [;)] ]'> ) about hackin' one workin' unit outta' these troubled twins! [:D] ]'>

While I've got the attention of our resident EEWizard, could you check out the DeclROMhackin' thread and the, recently turned open source, SuperDuoHack™ thread and let me know where I'm goin' wrong, please?

Also, since my guardian demon . . . methinks that B has taken over that particular job ::) . . . has reopened the can of worms I got rollin' years ago, regarding a theoretical update of the Luggable. What do you think of turning one into a wide screen Mini ITX (?) transportable? No batteries, just AC and maybe an internal hardwired inverter for auto-mobile computing a/o Airline/Train capable powerhack? It'd have to be a NumericKeyPad-Only Hack, unless maybe we'd go with a narrower LCD centered on the KBD and a fixed position TrackBall installation?

Is this one of my loony toons notions™ or the do-able variety?

TIA

Well, I finally cobbled the parts two together into a somewhat closer approximation of a working unit.

Scanner zeroes itself on the rails at powerup . . .

Indicator Lights on faceplate appear work for film and platen artwork indication . . .

Still have some SCSI Voodoo going on. At least I get a clear read on the identity of the device in some of the terminator configs I've tested.

Flickering Garbage displays in the window in other configs.

If anyone has a suggestion other than: doubling up the terminators on the scanner end . . .

. . . leaving the termination off, mixing in a terminator on the 6360's SCSI port like it's a PB or a IIfx . . .

I think I'll try daisy chaining it with a ZIP drive whose termination I know is good . . .

. . . and start looking for my active termination board.

My ScanJet ADF's blink their platen lamps if it detects the carriage is locked still.

This is one of the many reasons why I still totally trust HP for all printing and scanning products: They are virtually idiot-proof.

I have an Apple Color OneScanner 600 in its original box (missing inserts, though) for free + shipping if you want it. It's actually brand new, but I stole the lid + inserts for my 1200 dpi version. So you get a not-new lid.

Thanks, I really appreciate your offer. But I've got a nice new HP USB AIO Printer/Scanner/Copier/Fax that I've been using for the Scan Dumps and it works great.

Because of that, I haven't touched my trusty 'ole SCSI ScanMakerE3 in I don't know how long. The ScanMaker4 is special, first of all, because it's friggin' Legal Size HUGE! Mostly it's special because it scans film/negatives up to 8" x 10". I've got a Nikon CoolScan that I haven't even tried out yet for 35mm, but I've got about half a file folder box worth of B&W negatives from 2 1/4 square up through all kinds of roll film sizes and topping out at 4" x 5" of my company's signs in old NYC going back to 1927.

Now THAT is a scan dump just waiting to happen! :approve:
