ROM on IIci

Hello,

I just got a IIci which is not working (death shime).

At the moment the motherboard is drying after a good wash.

Here is my problem:

There is an empty white slot on the center of the motherboard, labelled "ROM SIMM". Is that rom missing ? Can the IIci work with this slot empty ?

The ROM slot is never filled on a IIci. There are several machines from the period like this. So yes, it will work.

If it makes a chime on startup, it has found a ROM. The IIci has a jumper at W1 that enables the built-in ROM.

I'm not confident because there's a weird (made by hand) solding on the motherboard. Seems someone already tried to fix it.

What have you got plugged into the video port? Is it known to work with other Macintoshes?

The IIci has very few modes, you basically have 640x480 on a standard monitor.

It's a multisync 14" which was sold with Performa 6200 (with bi speakers on each side).

This monitor works perfectly with other macs.

My 13" is not working very well, so I succeed in getting the rebirth IIci working on a 19" PC monitor (Hyundai imageFlat F910), using a 10 switches mac to vga adaptor with '145' as switches settings.

I have a IIci that was working perfectly a while ago. Now when I turn it on it makes a click sound and turns itself off. The PSU is fine tried in a Q650. I swaped their HDDs before IIci stopped working. I might touched the jumper during the swap!

Could it be?

Jumper the two-pin header at W1 near grid reference A8 on the MLB, unless you have one of the just-in-case separate ROM SIMM cards in the ROM slot. If there is one of the fabled ROM cards, leave the jumper off the header at W1.

If that Apple monitor you tried was the Apple Basic Color Monitor, then it does not work with the IIci. That was a very cheap VGA monitor with a .39 pitch which Apple introduced in the mid-90s.

The Apple Color Plus Display and of course, the various Apple trinitron displays work with the IIci (if they support 640 X 480).

No. If the ROM was missing/unrecognized the power would stay on but the machine would not chime.

Most likely, you have leaking capacitors under the power supply in the rear right hand corner of the motherboard. There are three or four caps back there which are actually needed by the power on circuitry, IIRC, and if they leak one often gets teh symptoms you describe. If they damage the surrounding traces, the power-on circuitry can be damaged and need repair. That's what happened to my IIci back around '95.

I just recapped a IIcx (close enough to a IIci) that would not power on and it works fine now. Mostly I just replaced the (9) 47uf 16V analytical aluminum dome surface mounts since I didn't have 10uf ones for the last 2. IIci's have the same issue as do other macs of that vintage with the power on circuitly apple used (never had a issue with old PCs that used a generic on/off switch and are older).

If you want to use a non mac monitor with the old mac II series with built in video you should dig up any Sony CRT monitor you have since they do sync on green and also do all the Apple video modes that most PC monitors don't bother with.
