Radius PrecisionColor 24X vs. Apple Macintosh 24AC . . .

. . . finally!

I sourced a Radius PrecisionColor 24X to compare with my remaining pair of Apple Macintosh 24ACs! [:D] ]'>

The new toy arrived today from a great eBay'r. So I just had to find out what was up with the "extra resolutions" available on the 24X, that are mentioned in the relevant LowEndMac Articles. I think I've got it partway figured out and I'm hoping to do some more experimentation after I get a few other things squared away.

I've got five pairs of screenshots ready to tweak-n-post using several VGA only, Switchable Adapters and a Rotary Switched Liberty Adapter.

All tests were done on my pet IIfx under 7.5.1 with No Drivers installed.

The early results are in though. It looks like the only difference between the Cards is the RAMDAC type and the ROM. The Apple branded 24ACs all had a 1993 v. 1.1 DeclROM on board, while the new Radius PrecisionColor 24X has a 1994 v. 2.0 DeclROM. I had a 24AC with what looks like the same RAMDAC as the one on the 24X in the middle position of the shot below.

I'll have to check the full res pics I took, because I sent the wrong card out to IIfx, which may be a boon for him, but might not matter at all. The v. 2.0 ROM from the 24X might very well turn the 24AC with either type of RAMDAC into a much more useful card.

The extra resolutions discovered so far are entirely related to VGA Resolutions that make the 24X a lot more LCD friendly than the 24AC.

In the configuration as defined above:

24AC VGA Output is limited to:

__640 x 480 x 24bit @ 60Hz

24X VGA Outputs are:

__640 x 480 x 24bit @ 60Hz

__800 x 600 x 24bit @ 60Hz

_1024 x 768 x 24bit @ 60Hz

I wonder if . . . NAH! . . . as a Monitor MFR and OEM for Apple, Radius certainly must have seen the writing on the wall before Apple did when it came to LCDs replacing CRTs on the Desktop. I wonder if they'd already begun to get involved with KDS as early as 1994? If nothing else, as a cross platform CRT and Graphics Card Mfr. Radius seems to have piled onto the VGA bandwagon well before Apple did.

For whatever reason, I think I've discovered the problem IIfx has been having with the 24AC I sent him.

It's official. My spare Apple Macintosh 24AC now thinks it's a Radius PrecisionColor 24X and the 21" MultiScan agrees!

The HP1710 17" LCD is also lovin' the new 24X Hybrid at all resolutions as well . . .

The HP Pavilion f50 15" LCD isn't quite so happy though, it will display all three VGA resolutions, but the 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768 auto-adjust with image offset a/o size issues.

No time to test the KDS/Radius 15" LCD before work, but it really ought to work fine . . .

OlePigeon, what's the ROM Rev on your Green Apple Macintosh 24AC, or it it the Radius IntelliColor 24X?

Has anyone got a more recent version of either Card's ROM or heard of a more recent version?

Just curious, mine does what I want it to do already, but it's time to do some more research . . .
