Quiet SCSI drive for Color Classic

I have a Hitachi/IBM Ultrastor 10K 73GB drive in my Color Classic, but it's kind of noisy (whines). I have half a dozen of these things, but they are all like that. I'm guessing its due to the rotational speed.

Does anyone know of another make/model drive that's quiet?  How about a Seagate Cheetah?

I was just thinking of CF to SCSI Adapter or IDE/SSD to SCSI Adapter like the Aztec Monster Cards. SCSI/SSD are too expensive as is, IDE/SSDs costs 10X less. Even with the adapter card, it will be cheaper than the SCSI/SSD.

$80 to $90 for a SCSI2SD isn't bad.  Cheaper than the Aztec Monster.  But, yeah, SCSI SSDs are astronomical in price.

I saw the SCSI2SD and the Aztec monster, but i guess it's more than I wanted to spend. SCSI2SD was out of stock.

I guess I'll wait and just pick up one of those.

Think of the SCSI2SD as an investment.  You can reuse it in any SCSI Mac you like (or PC!)  So if you get tired of this computer or decide to move to something else, you can take your SCSI2SD with you.

This is just a brief message to sing the praises of the SCSI2SD. It really is a seamless setup, though it took me a while to remember that I needed to use a modified version of the Apple HD SC setup in order to format the SD card. I could not figure out what values to enter in the SCSI2SD setup utility to get it to emulate a supported Macintosh hard drive. Incidentally, some assistance with that would be appreciated. In any case, the adapter works extremely well and I wish I was technically minded enough to develop a number of them on my own - the $100 price point (or whatever it's at) can be a bit steep if you're buying multiple adapters, but it's frankly worth it if you don't already have one. My LC III is so much quieter (and arguably a bit faster) with the SCSI2SD installed.

The SCSI2SD will be available at the end of March-- I'll get one then. In the mean time, I found a Quantum Atlas III that's farly quiet.  Much better than the Ultrastar.

I didn't realise the SCSI2SD works with any Mac with a SCSI port. Michael McMaster (the guy who develops them) has listed a very specific set of machines that the SCSI2SD works with, which include (but is perhaps not limited to) the SE/30, the Mac II (but not the IIx/IIfx?), the Mac LC III and LC 475. If the SCSI2SD works with any SCSI Macintosh, then I may indeed get another (or more)!

maybe i'm weird but i love these drives,   they are 2.5" 10,000 RPM SCA.  but they are about silent,  and so sick fast. and 100% backwards compatible all the way to Mac II / SE.

Total cost...  ------------- C H E A P!

Mounting:

You will have to figure that out on your own, little customization required.

Oh, you're probably right.  I haven't run into any problems yet, though.

mmcmaster's list only shows the ones he's either tested it on, or had test reports back from customers.  In theory it should work with any SCSI port.
