Quicksilver carcass and 21" Studio CRT

So in part of the Mac-related duties at my full-time I came across a Quicksilver G4 that was stripped of everything aside from a working PSU and motherboard. I tested it with parts from a working machine and didn't run into any trouble. It used to be a 1Ghz dualie and since it works I'm wondering why it was missing the rest of its innards. :-/

Anyway, we sometimes sell off old equipment internally so I asked if I could have it. For $25, I got it as well as a pair of Apple Pro speakers. When I dropped off my payment, my boss offered me a 21" Studio CRT (graphite) to go with it. Of course, I said yes, but I'm not quite sure where I'll put it when he brings it in! :D

I have most of what I need for the Quicksilver, and a friend of mine is coming to the rescue with a processor/fan/heatsink and the optical/zip drive cage. After I get done (at least for now!) it should look about like this:

+ 733Mhz G4

+ 512MB RAM+

+ 40GB HDD (or two, depending on what I have laying around!)

+ Radeon 9600 (or it may be a 9000, all I know is I have to tape the pins on it for it to work in the 4x AGP slot. Came from a dead G5. )

+ DL DVD/RW drive

The optical drive may be a bit of overkill, so it may just get a DVD-ROM instead. I'm going to be using this box mostly for OS 9-era games I can't run on my Intel machine or on my G4 Cube's pokey graphics card. (If I could find a working logic board for my Cube - it has bad Firewire ports > :( - I might bother to put something better in it!)

I know, it's bad around here trying to find anything good. A handful of friends live out West and they always manage to find really great deals or giveaways on Mac equipment, even some newer stuff. I'm just glad I could keep this one out of the recycling pile and put it to use with minimal expense, since I already had almost everything I needed for it! :p

I'm in Columbus too, and I know what you mean. I'm going to check out the OSU surplus sale tomorrow and see if there's anything worth getting -- I'll let you know.

The answer to your question lies in your very own words. The dual 1ghz cpu board from the Quicksilver is in high demand as an upgrade part for Digital Audios and slower Quicksilver models. So is the RAM and video card. You can frequently get more parting them out than leaving them intact.

The Studio CRT is only going to be of use if you have an ADC video card or a VGA-ADC adapter. the adapter isn't cheap because it's doesn't just carry the signal. It is also a power supply for the ADC monitor because without an ADC video card, the monitor has has no access to a power source. ADC monitors draw their current through a pin on the ADC connector.

Well - if this was somebody's personal property, I might be able to see that. There's no reason that a machine used by a large corporation would have been gutted like that unless of course the processor fried or something along those lines.

The CRT is one of the Graphite ones with a VGA connector, so there's no problem there. None of the wretched adapters needed!

A corporation might have gutted it if the IT department had other Macs in service that they needed parts for.
