question on the 8.6 hack to run ppc upgraded 68ks

Has anyone here done the hacks to get later versions of mac os to run ppc upgraded 68ks. If so what was thw performance like?

Terrible!  Especially when coupled with a considerably slower, older 68K-era memory/video/SCSI subsystems which all bring things down.  Unless you have a really fast PPC card (eg. 100Mhz), I wouldn't bother.

Keep in mind that the Road Apple 5200/6200 machines were basically 68k Macs with a PowerPC CPU grafted in. The performance was pretty lousy. MacOS 8.6 really didn't run too well on early NuBus Power Macs either.

That pretty much describes the PPC upgrades that go in 68K machines.

If you want a PPC machine, get a PPC machine to begin with. If you need/want NuBus slots for some reason, get a 7100 or 8100, or 9150, or a Power Computing Power 120, or a Radius 81/110.

I had a PowerPC601 upgrade in my IIci for a long while and even clock chipped it from 66 MHz to 96 MHz and it was not worth the trouble. It was a lot of fun to play with, but it was a hobby all by itself, especially keeping track of the compatibilities and work-arounds.

Other than seeing what happens, why would you want to run anything higher than Mac OS 8.1 on a 68K machine?

Almost all software for Mac OS 8.5 onwards is PPC only and can't run on a 68K machine. Mac OS 8.1. is very very useful on a 68K machine becaus eit allows access to HFS+ volumes.

I have a Sonnet 400MHz G3 card in my PM 8100 and it runs Mac OS 8.6 and 9.2.2 very nicely. The machine also has 232MB RAM and 32MB as a minimum is necessary.

It's not a 68K, I know, but it's the nearest that I have.

I do have a Performa 475 with a 50MHz 68040 upgrade card and 132 MB RAM and I must try and see how Mac OS 8.1 runs. Quite well I expect.
