Quadra 950 (Delta SMP-291AB) Power Supply Recap

IMG_6364 2.jpegQuadra 950 Power Supply, Input Board:

This one had two leaking caps. Unfortunately, Delta populated C905A and C905B with 16 V, 1000 µF Rubycon VXB electrolytics, a series so prone to leakage that Rubycon later advised manufacturers to stop using remaining stock.

As for this board, I pulled all the caps, gave it the complete decon treatment, ordered new caps and am waiting on Mouser to catch up after the winter storm.

Similar machines could probably do with a quick inspection before powering them on.

How did it work out? Took me a solid 8 hours first time I did a 950 PSU, a little less 2nd time around.
Taking it apart for the first time was a bit complex. It was also pretty dirty, so cleaning it and decontaminating the input board took a little while. The longest part was figuring out appropriate replacements for the caps that were in it. At this point, I am waiting on new caps from Mouser, but they are delayed from the storm a few days ago. My guess about time in total.. Probably 1.5 hours so far. Putting it back together should be quick.

Do you have a list that you can pass along? I have the same PSU, if you would care to share.
Let's wait on Mouser. I'd like to test them before I pass the list along.

I found this older list after I ordered mine:

So, not wanting to wait for Mouser to catch up and process my order after the storm, I dug through my cap pile and found two Nichicon VX(M) 1000uf 16v general purpose caps. Those are EOL, but they were close enough for now. I pulled and tested ESR and Capacitance of all the caps on the input board, and all (that were not leaking) were still within specs. Interestingly enough, the two leaky caps were almost dead on for capacitance and had only slightly elevated ESR... In the bin they went anyways.

The power supply is now back in the land of the living. I'll still install the new caps I ordered when they arrive, but for now the rot has stopped and the computer has happy again.
