Quadra 650 + ATTO SiliconExpress IV (SEIV) = no worky?

Anybody got this combination working?

I know the SiliconExpress IV is working fine, as I plugged it into a PPC Mac (I think it was a 7100? @ 80Mhz) and I was getting a nice 8-9MB/sec sustained rate with a fast SCSI drive off the 68pin port.

However, when I put the card in a Quadra 650 motherboard, it doesn't appear in any of the 3 NuBus slots (C, D, E) with any of the software I tried (Apple Diag, etc).

I also updated the firmware of the card to the latest official (1.65)

Any thoughts?

it did work like a charm for me... dont think taht thats the problem but in what cache mode are you running the 040?

I've had constant problems with SEIV cards in 840av and IIci machines locking up at random during disk access. I've had 2 cards, I passed the first one (honestly) to someone else because I thought it was defective. I got hold of a second one and it does the same. The upshot of that is I use a Jackhammer in my 840av instead, which works flawlessly but isn't as fast.

My understanding is that the SEIV is designed at hardware level to take full advantage of the NuBus and Macintosh system, in whatever way was possible. Some of the techniques they used were not exactly 'by the book' and so sometimes they just don't play nice. I may try mine in the 7100cx and see if it works sometime.

Thank you both for the replies.

As for the cache question: I don't know. How can I check? Any suggested tools?

Thanks

I don't have a 650 but I have run a SEIV on an 800 which is about the same thing.

There are manuals for the SEIV on the web if you need to look up operation.

Those cards are not made for booting an OS. Do the PPC units have a different SCSI manager in ROM then 68K macs would?

the 1.65 rom isnt scsi manager compatible at all... so the scsi manager version wuoldnt matter, hm?

Have you got another Nubus card in there that might be trying to become nuBus Master?

Thanks for the replies guys.

A couple of comments:

The card was on its own, no other NuBus cards to contend with it.

All NuBus slots work fine (with another card, not SCSI though)

I'm not trying to boot off the card, just see the drive attached to it. Still booting from the internal device.

I read the entire manual(s), but they're really terse. No good trouble-shooting section.

Lastly, I'm not sure about SCSI Manager ROM versions. More specifically?

Just an update for those who might hit a snag in the future:

The SE IV didn't work (was freezing) on a PowerMac 7100 with a Sonnet G3 upgrade card.

However it did work with the 2.1rc2 firmware update. The 2.1rc2 update makes the SE IV SCSI Manager 4.3 compliant, which Sonnet's G3 driver requires. In order to use the 2.1 upgrade you must manually choose the hex address of the slot the card is in; it won't find it on it's own like the 1.65 updater. Holding down the shift key on program launch and typing 0B hex did the trick.

You don't just put in say a "1" for nubus slot 1? Or is it a "a" for slot 1?
