Quadra 605 slow ethernet speeds

My Quadra 605 is connected to a LAN through an Apple Ethernet LC Twisted-Pair Card. I'm running OS 7.6.1 with TCP/IP under OpenTransport 1.1.1 using DHCP server.

My connection speeds tops out at around 56k/sec. Shouldn't I be seeing much faster speeds?

Thanks for any suggestions.

That depends heavily on what software you're using to do transfers. That'd be a decent speed for certain things (such as data over ssh) or via a browser which has tons of overhead for other things. If you're only getting 50 k/sec or so while transferring using, for instance, AFP, then yes, something's wrong.

Thanks John. I'm getting about 56K/second when using a web browser. Tried an ftp connection with Fetch 2.1.2 and the speed is a bit better at around 80K/second.

What speeds do you get transferring a file locally - ie, from another machine on your LAN to the Quadra?

If you're using Fetch for FTP, go into Preferences and set the Buffer to Ethernet or Fast Ethernet. (It defaults to a setting appropriate for a modem.)

This preference may only have a appeared with fetch 3.x and higher -- that's the version you should be using with OpenTransport anyway...
