Powermac G5 for free

Could not resist as saw this offered for free.

Powermac G5 with replaced 80Gb HDD. No idea of model & speed, the ad did not say and i did not ask ;D

However powercord design and the large metal around the processor(s) reminds of me of Dual Core -models.

Will pick up tomorrow after work and then shall see. Luckily he was only about few km away from my usual route work-home.

I've had before Single 1.8 and Dual 2.3 models, but have given away and sold those to a friend who was in need of G5 badly at the time. Again it's time to add an G5 to my collection, this time it stays there - i can not see anybody i know wanting an G5 for daily-usage anymore.

Picked it up today. It turned out to be in rather OK condition, no bends, no scratches, nothing. It came from some print shop etc so might have stand there for years in one place.

Model : 2 Ghz Dual Core, 2.5GB RAM, 80GB HDD, DVD-+RW and stock Graphics card, no WLAN no Bluetooth. Cleaned up and upgraded RAM but only shows up 3GB. Few modules are not working. Need to check if i still have some left and hidden somewhere. Should be easily upgradeable to 8GB. Just installing clean 10.5.

Not too bad at all.

Thanks. I really like the design too. I remember when G5 was released, i wanted one but could not afford one at the time. Now i've had 3 different models and also MacPro (early 2008, server).

Have had random lockups and crashes, had to go thru all my RAM in hand to find combination where all are seen at System Profiler. Now running decent 4GB RAM. Still not sure if the machine is stable, need to run some RAM test and long-lasting test to see how it responds. But can't really complain, it was after all, free.

My suggestion as I get these all the time and repair the 2ghz model for people. First is one processor usually dies in the dual and will either show only one processor or lock up and crash when it tries to use that processor. I have some spares but they are heavy. I would suggest downloading and using ASD 2.5.8 and if a processor fails then that's of course what you need. If the processor shows up and tests don't error it out these machines are notorious for dust as air goes straight across and mucks up everything. Pulling out everything one at a time cleaning and reseating can fix a lot. The last thing that makes this a jacked up machine is the solder on the ram slots, they are small and weak. When they heat up they flex and bam unstable machine. Again the ASD may catch this, only fix for hat is reflow and that requires pulling he board and a hot air gun. That's risky but for free nothing to lose right?

Once you figure it out they are a great machine, but the G5 systems just don't feel as snappy as the G4 units. They are fun though.

If it is a processor the 2 ghz have two or three model codes (different units made at different times) that have to be matched to work in th system.

When i find the RAM wich worked, showed up at System Profiles, i did not get any hold ups, balloons or crashes at all. I was running it for hours last night without problem. I'll see if i can find 8 pcs of matching 1GB modules (like it would really matter having 4GB vs. 8GB). I'll try up the ASD 2.5.8 when have time. Now it's running 10.5.8 quite nicely.

For sure, the dust needs to be cleaned up from the processor unit, not sure if go that far to take parts whole machine however. Not my favorite machine to work with :O
