I've just obtained another logic-board and recapped before it was fired up.

Fired it up - Happy Mac icon shows, then "Welcome to Macintosh" comes up, then the screen goes all black!!!! ( I would say just before extensions loads, at that point it goes all black - I haven't seen any extensions to load at all)
 

What could be wrong?

Does it continue to boot after the screen goes black?  Could be the backlighting failing

Also try booting with a good Disk Tools 7.0 or 7.1 disk. 

Try a different power supply. Any Mac power adapter up to the original G3/iBook yo-yo power adapters will work (except for Portable, 1x0, 500 series, and 190/5300).

Do you have a Dock with external video capabilities? Try using it in that to see if it has the same problems.
