Powerbook 540c and internet

How can i use the internet with the powerbook 540c. I connected an RJ45 AAUI ethernet transceiver. I have netscape navigator 2.0 and system 7.5. I try to load a site (for instance http://www.google.com) and the below message appears:

Netscape was unable to create a network socket connection.

There may be insufficient system resources or the network may be down. (Reason)

Try connecting again later or try restarting Netscape.

Go to your TCP/IP control panel and ensure it is set to ethernet. Then, either use DHCP or type the manual info for your network.

Are you using Open Transport or the classic networking? I try to use OT with all my internet connected Macs

Good point nary. I always use OT and end up assuming everyone else does too.

Dimitris, if you are using MacTCP and want to use OT, go to find file and search for "selector". This will give you the network software selector. Choose OT from the list and follow my above instructions.

i used MACTCP and i connected to the internet but with netscave navigator 2.0 i couldn't do anything

I am not familiar with MacTCP, but glad to hear you got connected. What do you mean by "couldn't do anything"? I think you should try Navigator 4.05, (The last for 68k 7.5) which will have immensely better standards support than 2. If you want to run 7.6.1, you can go to 4.08.

16MB of RAM is recommended for all of these, how much do you have?

A message was appearing about java all the time and i tried to go to www.macintoshgarden.org but everything appeared wrong. I have 12 mb ram installed but when i find time i will install the 32 mb ram.

A. Go to 4.05 for it to render better.

B. Go to preferences and disable javascript, or maybe you can turn off just the warnings, but disabling it completely will load pages a good bit quicker.

Better to use a text-only browser like wanna-be. Even a Quadra will seem fast.

An interesting alternative experiment would be to try CyberDog, with ALL available updates (for which it is necessary to do some digging). I have used it on a Quadra 605 as recently as five years ago, and it was a little iffy like all the old browsers, but surprisingly usable for some purposes. For FTP it was wonderful. I had it doing email and the whole works.
