PowerBook 150 Failure.

While Working on my powerBook 150 today, I got it to a almost perfect condition. Put it back together and, a Black screen and a bad smell. On further inspection it seems that I have put the IDE Connector one slide to the right. The HD is toast I know. But is there something I can do to fix this Ailing powerbook. I have removed the HD and all it does is show a black screen...

Ideas?

Its a good thing you have a large collection, cause you seem to be the bringer of death ...

can you get to the main board of the mac, if so sniff around up close (like practically touching the mobo) and see if anything else smells like your hard drive (and as strong cause there might just be some lingering stank)

The Hard Drive, smells, and the IDE connector smells on the MainBoard.

The Machine is still outputting video. But just a blank black screen.

Well JRL, TO be honest your offer is very tempting, but I really don't want to spend any monies. And shipping from CA might be hell. If you are willing to pay shipping on your end, I'll pay shipping on my end. What would you like? I have External HD IDE enclousures. I have some Ram Sticks. Some iBook Parts. Just name it and I'll tell you if I have it. I would like to fix the one I have though. Im sure I can get this thing back together. so yeah.

Could it be the single fuse on the logic board? How dead is it?

The machine made a burning smell...unfortunately i'd say its toast.

Damn. Is it possible to replace a dead component instead of the whole board? How can putting in the IDE Connector incorrectly fry the board?

It can kill it very easily if it causes the wrong voltage to end up in the wrong place, or something horrible like that. If the machine's not powering up at all, its more than just the IDE controller being at fault...its probably not worth your time to try and repair it.

It is powering up. To a black screen. The floppy is getting power as well.

that just means you didnt kill the internal power supply, logic on the other hand is a very fragile thing, you basically shunted 5 volts down a (less than) 3 volt data line and most likely cooked something

yes it might be possible to repair if its something semi simple, but I would not touch it (and I am working on my masters in electronic design)

chalk it up to experience, and you need to slow down and pay attention, something you seem to tend not to do
