PowerBook 145B

I got a PowerBook 145B from the friend who gave me the iMac and the PowerBook 150. The keyboard is much better than my 150's (The keys are quite stiff on the 150) and I love the extra ports. It has some problems though. The hinge is visible when you close it, not as fast as the 150 and the track ball only works vertically. It came with some things too: 2 power adapters, a PowerBook 100 floppy drive, ADB mouse 2 and 1 sysnet Localtalk (Phonenet clone) adapter. It will replace the 150 on the desk. Best of all I got it for free!

Nice. I run 7.1 on my 145b. I also found a 4mb ram up grade for it so it has a full 8mb. That seemed to help it a bit.

I wasn't aware that the 145b could run 6, I thought 7.0.1 was the minimum on it. (I know the original lineup of 100, 140, and 170 can be forced to run 6.0.8L, but I didn't think any of the later models could even be forced into it.)

I find that it all depends on RAM. With less than 8 MB, a 7.0 or 7.1 is definitely more snappy than 7.5. With exactly 8 MB, 7.5 or 7.6 become possible. With more than that, 7.5 or 7.6 is very usable. (And "more than that" includes the use of RAM Doubler, but not built-into-Mac-OS virtual memory.)

6 only runs with some hackery...

you need the kanji talk version of system 6 - that was modified by apple to run on the 145b because when the 145b came out there where problems localizing system 7 (which also just came out)

you can simply replace the strings in the system resources with the ones from whatever language system 6 you want.

and i also have the full 8mb ram in my 145b... these 8mb really make system 6 fly... ;)
