Power Mac 6100/66 DOS Compatible Card Feckgoofery

First off, special thanks to imactheknife for getting my 6100 working after a very long slumber.

Now onto business:

After finally locating the breakout cable for the DOS card, I’m having a difficult time loading the two Windows partitions that came with my 6100 - one is DOS 6.2/Win 3.1, and the other is Win 95.

On the rare occasion, I can get the partitions to load in PC Setup and access their respective contents. However, each partition randomly crashes after a few minutes, and I’m left with a black screen.

Most of the time, the partitions will not do anything and remain at “PC is booting” status on the PC Setup program (again, I didn’t create these partitions and I’m just using what came on the drive).

Before I nuke everything and start from scratch, what am I missing here? I also can’t change the RAM or Monitor settings in PC Setup (oh and sound doesn’t work in 8.1 - but it plays music CDs OK through the internal speaker).

Have you done the fresh install from PC Compatibility software?

I do have 100% 6100 DOS as well from what last time I used the monitor can be changed. But RAM is onboard which can't be adjusted - I think it's dimmed, but the sound does work.

Hi,

Great fun but I suspect you will need to try an older Mac OS, and fresh install of DOS/Windows in new partitions - they could be corrupted. Mac OS 8.1 does not play particularly nicely with PC Setup 2.17. See also thread here on it:

- IIRC you can hold down option + command at the Monitor icon to select different resolutions, but that's only if using an external display
- You can't select RAM if you have a SIMM installed on the card - it's much faster this way anyhow over vampire RAM
- Sound - your wiring sounds incorrect or you've not selected it correctly in Monitors and Sound control panel/see input
- Physically check the card, new thermal paste on CPU (it gets hot in there), clean connectors

I've attached the 6100 DOS Compability technical manual which details more on software.

No, I’m just using what was installed by the previous owner.

I’m running 1.6.4

The wiring is fine. I loaded 7.5.3 from my external Apple drive and the sound works perfectly (although the 6100’s internal speaker is very tinny compared to my IIfx and Q950) so something is/became blotched in 8.1

I have the original install disc for the 6100 and the floppies for the PC Card so I think I’ll start from scratch and see what happens. It just sucks as there are a lot of DOS games that were already installed on the drive.

Does it have DOS partitions or container files? I suggest trying PC setup 2.1.7 to see if it fixes the problem. 2.1.7 is suppose to fix some issues with OS 8.1 and later. The problems I had seemed to be unique to the 630 DOS systems
