Power CD

Was looking for one for a long time, and missed a really cheap (and complete) one lately.

Just collected an almost complete unit for (what seems like) a fair sum (45 €)

So i have the main unit (including the base), PSU and remote (so is missing mainly the A/V cable, software and manuals)

Not fully tested, but switched yesterday in the evening, loaded a CD and tracks were detected properly :beige:

The remote was dismantled, cleaned and some welds were re-flowed before i get it working.

That's very good find! Love the PowerCD design. Been looking for one for quite a time, those just wont pop up anymore.

The CD section is totally useless without electronics in the base.

Nice find for a working unit. I have a PowerCD myself, but it refuses to read any disk

Probably because the PSU is connected to the base, and not the CD section.

Don't know if the Philips and kodak branded units were the same (i Think the Power CD was the only to supply SCSI connection)

Edit from what i have found, the Power CD is the only to supply SCSI, all units are powered by the base

The previous owner has collected a huge haul of Apple stuff, apparently huge enough for a lifetime (among it... 5 Power CD's , several Quicktake units, Apple II's ans III's, probably the full range of Compact units, LC's, Powermacs... 5 Lisa's and 4 TAM's)

Everything collected from a former Apple retailler.

PowerCD Base Unit Teardown Pics . . .

There's a lot more than just a power connector and battery bay in there. Hook a SCSI cable to the player unit's non-SCSI DB-25 and, dollars to doughnuts, something dies a gruesome death.

Just tested, everything is working great and sound is pretty good for a 1993 item.



The remote is working fine, and the amber display is cute.

Should be tested with a computer, but don't know why it won't work.

Should work great with a computer, the refurbed PCD I bought on the MUG connection was my only optical drive until the price of the OmniWriter CD-RW hit my $399.00 tech adoption point.

Audio CDs are still 1x and the encoding hasn't changed AFAIK, are you comparing the PCD on a digital I/O system vs. Analog basis?

Power cd has its own extension (driver) it does not work with standard apple cd extension
