Picked up a few macs, don't know where to start

I was checking it out and theres a label on the bottom that says "1.1 GB/20 MB - Bad Screen"

So we're now in the same boat Lol it probably shit out when it was new and spent 30 years in that Duo Dock.

Is it possible to still use the laptop with the Duo Dock?
LOL wouldn't that just be the case??

Yes, you could use it as a standalone with the dock.

I found an Apple ImageWriter II, Apple Stylewriter, Apple Personal LaserWriter LS, and an Apple Scanner. No cords for anything and the stylewriter is missing the tray(s) its just the body.

Worth keeping?

Is this a decent laptop?

It’s the only PowerPC Duo that was ever made, so it’s pretty desirable and interesting.

It’s a 100MHz 603e on a 32-bit data bus with no L2 cache just like the PowerBook 5300 series, so it’s not likely to be the best computing experience.

Any other recommendations?

Enjoy it and be patient with it.

The ImageWriter II and StyleWriter are interesting printers. The latter was Apple’s first inkjet printer and widely seen as a big improvement over the ImageWriter II which it basically superseded in the home market.

The Personal LaserWriter LS on the other hand is not. I used to have one like this but it was a NT model that I later upgraded to an NTR and it was quite a nice - if basic - printer. The LS is a cost reduced version that basically offloads the print processing to the Macintosh it’s connected to and it can’t even take a board upgrade unlike its sister, the SC. In addition, these printers need recapping so you’d likely have to do a bit of work to bring it up to spec. It’s better as a parts donor for an NT/NTR imho.

Depends what you mean by 'decent'. Duos in general are like proto-Airs; they sacrifice performance and connectivity for weight and size, and they have the dock thing. The 2300c is the only PPC Duo; so if that sounds like your thing, yes, it's decent. If what you mean is 'is it a 9500 replacement' then the answer is no.

I reckon the ImageWriter is worth keeping if you have a matching computer, as you can still get the ribbons and they're as rugged as a cockroach. StyleWriter II will be all gummed up and probably not work. Apple Scanner is cool too if working well.

I wouldn‘t be too sure about that. I have three of them and they still work great. You can get aftermarket cartridges (Canon BC-02) easily and since they include the print head, you‘ll have a good chance of getting it to print with little work.

unfortunately they also need recapping. they have SMD caps on the main board of the SONY drive.
Everything does. I did plug it in to the wall and turn it on to see what would happen it seems to work good. The light was green and it ejected a square plastic tray out that you put a cd in, then i push it back in there and the light gos yellow for a minute while its doing its thing then green again. Then it spits the tray back out, i didnt put any cd or anything in it or have it hooked up to anything. But the ejection mechanism sounded great. Where I live doesnt get very hot so that could have played a role in these systems and devices' caps lasting a few years longer than they would somewhere else in the country. At least thats a hypothesis I came up with lol

Thanks everyone for the input on the printers and scanner I dont want to reply directly to everyone since there was alot of you, but ive pretty much decided ill hold onto them all with the exception of the big and bulky laserwriter. Its just massive and heavy so it will end up being parted with eventually i figure. The other stuff is pretty easy to store.

I am almost done going through all the apple products from this hoard and ive in my head pretty much made up my mind (mostly) what i want to keep and what I dont want to keep. I will start going through sparcstations and other pc related stuff in the coming days.

But the big thing with all of this "product" is the recapping issue. Either I need to learn how to do it myself, which I want to. My only experience has been reflowing some dry sockets i have never replaced capacitors. I would love to buy a ~better than average solder station and gun in the near future, before winter, and start to mess around. In the mean time I wonder about any members that do it if they might want to work out a deal. I could do cash, trade, partial trade and cash. With some of this stuff as part of the trade. Something to think about maybe DM me if you do recapping and we can chat.

Ran into the first thing thats stumped me so far. Took apart the SE with the radius card in it. Trying to get the logic board out but theres a card on top of it that the radius card plugged into, and the socket is hitting and wont let me pull the board up. I dont know what to do ive look all around for something to take off etc. I was about to just bend the brackets as it looked like someone already did that at one point they are bent lol.

What to do?

Just gently bend one side of the metal chassis out until one side of the board swings free. I've seen exactly that in the install instructions for other compact Mac upgrades.

I knew this had to be the way but i thought how could that be the official method lol. Going to do it now thanks

So i got it all out and whatnot and its got a battery soldered in with legs. A while back I got this kit from ebay for my IIgs https://www.ebay.com/itm/235645917276 It was the same situation to hook it up in my IIgs. What I was thinking is why dont I rob the one out of my IIgs and put it in this SE and ill get another later. But what ill do is cut off the battery holder and snake the wires though a port hole in back the SE then the battery will be outside of the case. Ill use 3m velcro to attach it to the back, the kit comes with velcro to do so. What do you guys think? should work right?

First though I need to know if a battery is of much importance in an SE. If not ill just cut it out and leave it out, I don't care about clock time if thats all that it will effect.

Thanks guys

Running without a battery is annoying because every time you boot the machine, the default mouse speed is super slow.
But all you have to do is change it right? What do you do for a battery? Did you solder one in or just buy a holder similar to the one I got? What is the normal

Yep. I soldered in a holder on my SE, but I enjoy soldering. The holder in your pictures looks like a pretty slick solution. That's the first time I've seen it done that way.

I just found it browsing ebay one day for my IIgs i figured it would work the same. Would be cool to have it outside of the case too so you dont have to open it up. But then again it takes a few minutes to open it up, think ill just leave it inside as im keeping it anyway. Would be a good solution for someone who didnt want to ever tinker with it. Thanks for the help
