Performa 6300

Did you use a PCI card in it, the 6300 PSU would supposedly be fine with no expansion card function required? Don't know if ALL PCI cards requite 3.3V, it's just a voltage required by the spec. AFAIK.The 3.3v line hack requirement has been "common knowledge" since the TAKKY day.

The only thing I'm going on here is that LEM quote regarding overall power related concerns. "Working" on the ragged edge of adequacy and working comfortably within spec are two very different things. PCI expansion card or lack thereof would be a major factor in where the power line is drawn in the sand. That's why I'm curious enough to check out the ratings of my 6290 and 6360 PSUs. LEM's often wrong, but the don't often update those errors, that's why I'm lending credence to their admonition.

From what they are saying a pci card will not have its relevant 3.3 volts needed.  The board itself works fine, but the pci will not work from how I am understanding it.  I would guess they got this info from years past Takky Hacks for a color classic.

If you get 6500 board, it has the 3.3V regulator on board.

PCI cards can either use tons of power, or almost no power at all. Some use 3.3V, others don't. If its about following the spec, 3.3V is needed, but PCI cards can throw a systems power requirements pretty far. To be safe, you need a 3.3V regulator, but even with that, some PCI cards might draw more power than the PSU can provide. Running dual PCI cards is a gamble on power requirements too.

If I remember correctly, I used a pci video card at the time. I believe it worked quite well.

FWIW, my 6400 board wouldn't even boot in my 630 without the 3.3v regulator mod. Forget PCI not working, the whole machine wouldn't even turn on.

Picked up a 6500 board with RAM and ethernet on eBay for 30 bucks, free shipping! Woohoo!

It should still work with my Apple Video System right?

yes, same board for the video, but if you have a com slot card it will not.  the 6300 is comm slot and the 6500 is comm slot II.

I'll see if i can dig up mj's thread, somebody explained to him how to  mod his board and it worked like a charm. Maybe he'll post pics, I'd like to see it too.
woops! missed the request somehow.

360alaska pointed me to the 3.3v regulator. I copied johnklos wiring to get it all working. This was a 'to see if it works' deal slap together job, and it does work just fine. I've cleaned it up a bit since, but you get the idea.
