Is they any free software that will password protect Class Mac OS before Mac OS 9?

Well, there was At Ease, which Multiple Users in OS 9 is the direct descendant of, but it's a separate package.
I don't think At Ease is free, it is? There was an extension I had a while ago but I had to re-format and lost the disk/download. It came up during boot(hopefully it comes up after BootX) and even with extensions off.
Nope, it was a separate package. Not hard to find though.
I wanted a solution where I would not have to spend money but I will keep in eye out for it at my local thrift stores.
At Ease was originally bundled with the System 7 installation disks. I have a good example of System 7.1 in its original box with all of the disks, and documentation.
I doubt thrift stores would accept vintage software; I've never personally found any software there. A better alternative would be to place a want ad on Kijiji, and wait for a reply. Or if you are near Brampton, I can make you a copy of At Ease (but it would be the System 7 version).
There is a large "thrift store" warehouse here in Georgetown, where I live, they often have old software, I got my Mac there and my copy of OS 8.0 and 8.5 there. There is not really anything to protect on my Mac, so I only consider the password to be a "nice to have". It's too bad no one knows the software I'm talking about, it was weird for it even asked for a password with extensions turned off -- I will have to look though my old Mac disks.(filled with things I downloaded online)

Do you have a citation with that, or is it just that yours had them? I had the At Ease 1.0 retail packaging at some point, it is likely still in my storage locker, so it seems odd that it would also be bundled as part of the operating system.

Unfortunately, I don't have any article that backs up my post. I'm not sure why At Ease was bundled with my System 7.1 software package - one can assume it was for educational purposes and/or marketing - but I don't see why it's odd. I can upload some pics of the entire software package in order to clarify things.

ISTR having the At Ease manual from one of my System Software retail packages, but I couldn't find it. It's mentioned in all the installer manuals, so that might be the origin of that impression. I never had a retail copy of 7.1, however as I never used it, but I recall there being vanilla and professional versions from the Rocket compatibility info, maybe it was bundled with 7.1P?

I know I never bought it and I never ran anything that wasn't licensed for my business or for personal use. So check out 7.5.3, I think it's on the free upgrade package that came with the Quadra 630, which could have been distributed via Tekserve or might have been a coupon redemption, don't recall. It might be on the "You're Special" Developer CD. I know I used that for every 7.5 installation done after I got it.

Password Security was a part of the OS, but is ONLY for PowerBooks, it will not work on ANY desktop Mac. (unless you consider a docked Duo as a desktop)

That's what I was checking . . . PowerDuo in the Dock/Portrait installation.
I don't have a citation for it but I did read somewhere that Profames did come with At Ease "back in the day". They did not come with the install disks but the software was pre-lodeed. My Mac had a dieing hard disk when I got it second hand so I can't confirm this from experience either.
Sounds like a great reason to to watch for a Performa CD on eBay in that case, though what might need password protection on 68k in the present day is a puzzler.

OK, I've uploaded pics of the original packing list for System 7.1, in addition to the At Ease Setup Guide, and Quick Reference Card. The At Ease software is on a separate installation disk. However, as the packing list states, it was clearly bundled with the System 7.1 software package (and I believe that System 7.1 was the first OS to include the At Ease software - I don't recall System 6 ever supporting At Ease - but please correct me if I am wrong).
You made me curious, so I got out my own boxed USA System 7.1 install package, and wtf! there it is. I never noticed before, mostly because I was only interested in the operating system.
I also have a System 7.1 boxed upgrade kit with At Ease (and the QuickTime disk). I'm not sure if it was a promo that we all just so happen to have or if it was standard equipment. Perhaps the "personal upgrade kit" was bundled with At Ease (as I recall, I have the same product).
