OS 8.5 freezes while loading on a 9600

Hello guys, this is my first post in this community, who already helped me a lot with some nice thread I followed in the past.

I'm italian so forgive me for my english, not so sure to write it all that good. :)

I'm a proud owner of a 8600 bought in the 1998 that serves me well also today and still works great.

In recent time a friend sent to me for free a dismissed 9600, that I now trying to make it work, just to have a back up unit in the case my beloved old 8600 would fail.

This 9600 has a Kansas mother board, a Newer Technology MaxPowr G3 processor, and an Adaptec AHA-2940W ultra wide scsi card with a second HD ( IBM ddrs 39130 e182115 hg 3.5" 9 GByte)

There are two video card inside: one is the Vertex Twin Turbo 128M8A 128mb M1 Video Card Assy 9610 that apparently doesnt work. The other is a ati pn 109-32900-10 and this is actually workin.

The SO is 8.5 of which I own the original disk.

Then I purchased on the web a OrangeMicro 620 Windows compatibility card (without software that I'm seeking) and an USB PCI card with four USB 2.0 ports, and trying to make them works, as thet do well on the 8600.

Of course I already knew that OS 8.5 wont support USB PCI card, and so tried to upgrade it to 8.6 (which works so well on my 8600), but with no success. The installer report a problem decompressing the files, and stop the upgrading process.

This 9600 is giving me a lot of troubles. The machine came with no software drive of the processor card and the ultra wide scsi card, but these worked sometimes with no apparent fault.

Few days ago I was able to make it start bootin both from the HD and the OS CD with no problems.

Now, I'm experiencing an unusual freeze just while loading the OS.

WHen I start the machine from the Keyboard, sound is ok, little mac smilin icon on grey screen is ok, then correctly switch to colour picture and with the Mac OS desktop behind it, but as soon the loading display bar approaches about une fifth of its range, it freezes there and nothing more happen.

This happen tryin to boot both from HD and the CD.

Now the question is: why the 9600 is doing so, and how can I override this problem?

I tried to reset cuda chip and PRAM (command+option+P+R) but no result.

Does somebody has never experienced something like this?

How can I override to this problem?

Thank you for any suggestion.

Best Regards.

John

The issue is the processor upgrade. You need an older cpu to do the install, then install software (usually an init and a control panel) for the processor and then you will be good to go.

Thank you for your reply.

So, I'll try to use the old original 603 ev processor card I got in the 8600, boot the system, then load the software of Maxpowr G3 an then re install the G3 445 Mhz card.

It is correct?

regards

John

Hello, I installed the 604ev card processor in the 9600, removing the NewerTech g3/445 card, but was unable to boot.

Tried to boot from the HD, and the 8.5 original CD I own.

Tried to reset the CUDA chip, then the logic board disconnecting the power supply and removed the battery.

Tried to reset PRAM from the keyboard with COMMAND+ALT+P+R

Nothing ehappened.

No sound when powered on, no video, only some noise from the HD and the fan

What other can I try to do?

Please help

Thank you

John

Take out all of the PCI cards you don't absolutely need. Reseat those that you keep.

Reseat the RAM.

Check all of the SCSI connections and keep connected only what you need. Make sure the SCSI bus you are using is terminated and the SCSI IDs are all different.

If it is an older 9600, it may not be compatible with the 604ev CPU from your 8600. What is the CPU speed marked on the front of the 9600 case? Or if that doesn't exist, the motherboard model?
