mybook WD 500 GB studio spin up problem ...

I have ext 500 GB WD Studio and when it goes to sleep, it wount wake up, the finder gets beach ball until the disk is disconnected and then device removal dialog shows ... running iBook G4 with Tiger. I check a little on google others have some similiar problems with WD drives. Does anybody have the same problem or the same drive without problem, maybe in Leopard it works?

well i don't have the same drive, but i have a WD 120GB SE IDE on the internal IDE chain and have no issues with it what so ever, what it sounds like is the external drive don't support the deep sleep function of the Mac or OS X, when a piece of hardware doesn't support the deep sleep function of the Mac then what you explained happened is what the result is.

one easy was to fix it is disable the computer goes to sleep after a set period of time. i don't know if HDD sleep is part of the issue but test with it enabled if you still have issues disable that as well, the only power saving feature that wont affect the drives is the monitor sleep.

i dont know what else to tell you, maybe get another drive

the problem is that the drive it self has sleep mode independet of computer ... so even a computer stays wake, the drive goes to sleep by it self and wont spin up ...

ohhh ok, that changes things a bit, isn't there setup software for this drive to disable its sleep mode, or maybe some sort of hardware in the case to disable sleep. there would have to be a way to disable its sleep mode. maybe its in its firmware

i know it prolly wont help but did you try to deselect HD sleep when possible.
