measuring capacitor values

Hi all

Silly simple question. I have a simple meter for reading the values of caps. Question : can i read the value of a cap while it is still in the board , or do I have to unsloder at least 1 leg or does the cap have to be fully removed to get an accurate reading.

heres is the yolk i use for testing

Thanks folks

I'm pretty sure that if you want to get an accurate value, you have to remove the entire capacitor.

IF you want to approximate if it works, it's probably okay to leave it in-circuit.

If one leg is grounded you can remove the other leg and use an ESR meter to check if it is good. Since quite a few capacitors are in parallel in a circuit the readings you would get are meaningless if measuring in board.
