Macwrite 5.0 and below lockup in System 7.1.1

I was using Macwrite 4.6 in a Mac Classic II running system 7.03. All was well and good until I decided to upgrade the HDD and install 7.1.1. Now any version of Macwrite that isn't the bloated Pro will lock up as soon as it opens a new document. Is this normal? Any way to fix it? I'm enjoying the simplicity of the pre Pro versions of Macwrite. I'd hate to have to use anything else. Thanks!

Some comments on this:

1. I have used MacWrite 5.0 on a Mac LC without any problems. An LC can't run anything below 6.0.6 and I found MacWrite 5.0 was fine on 6.0.8. I also have used it with 7.1 on the same LC and it ran fine. In fact, I have launched MacWrite 5.0 from AtEase. I cannot comment on 4.5 and 4.6 on newer hardware, although I did once use 4.6 on a Classic with 6.0.7. I have never tried running MacWrite 4.x on System 7. I also have never owned a copy of System 7.1.1 (System 7 Pro) but to my knowledge it's just a repackaged System 7.1 with a few add ons. The Classic II and LC have some similarities between their design so I'm guessing it's probably not a hardware issue, but then again, you never know. Try 7.1.1 on another Mac, preferably something older, and see what happens with MacWrite.

2. The linked thread mentions another version of MacWrite, which is the updated MacWrite II. I have found MacWrite II to be arguably my favorite vintage Mac word processor since it's fast and has most of the basic features I need in a word processor. In fact, I designed a newsletter for the band parents association of my high school entirely on MacWrite II (with the heading done on sister program MacDraw II) for three straight school years. MacWrite II runs fine on OS 9 and won't be any problem on a Classic II.

3. As with any software troubleshooting issue on these older Macs, a few questions come to mind. Which extensions do you have installed? (Try booting up with the shift key down to turn them off, then try launching MacWrite again). Does your Classic II have any add ons, like a math coprocessor, in its slot? How much RAM are you allocating to the application? (I know MacWrite 4.x doesn't need much to run, but this should be checked).

4. Just to clarify--there was never a System 7.0.3. 7.0.1 was the only 7.0.x double decimal version.
