Macintosh LC I - Oddities - eBay

Ok So I bought this lot of 6 LC machines.

Well, It was 3 lots, 2 computers in each lot.

Lot One, 2 (LCI)

Lot Two 1 (LCIII) 1 (LCII)

Lot Three 2 (LCII)

Anyways I just got the 2 (LC I's) lot.

Opened them up,

One has this Big Cap soldered on,2200uf 16v, Where normally a 100uf 6.3v cap is.

It looks like a factory mod

Anyone ever seen this before with the LC I ?



Also this other LC, has what looks like a factory installed Hard drive, but it looks like the drive has a black plate on the front,

with an activity light, the hard drive looks just like the drive that would normally be installed. There isn't any apple stickers on it, a much larger rainbow scsi cable, and the HD-Power connector has wires that are much thinner then what is normally used in these LC's



I guess these came from a huge lot of computers won, From a government auction in texas.

That's a motherboard variation that came with the earlier (I believe) produced LCs. Two of my LCs have the giant glued on axial cap.

That HD plate/ribbon is something I haven't seen before though.

I wonder why they needed to install that monster cap? Wish I had the LC-1 schematics.

The drive may've been an upgrade unit from the '90s. What size is it?

I have to bring them home and fire them up.

The one with the big cap, has a bad PSU, No problem though, I'm sure the caps are crusty.

I will let you know what size it is.

Neither that drive nor ribbon are Apple - I'd say that it may have originally had no HD, and that at some point someone may have put this HDD and these cables in.

ok the hard drive is 80 megs I think...

its very hard to poke around the os

at first it went right to afterdark and then wanted a password,

so i booted it up with a floppy and moved after dark to another folder.

If i had to take a stab at the language, i might say Japanese.

Swap the Finder on that LC for one that matches the System 6 System file. You'll find it easier to navigate the file system.

I've had both LC motherboards like that, one with the giant cap, one without. It's normal.

That HDD looks like an aftermarket upgrade. I dig the rainbow cable.

I may be able to explain the presence of a third party hard drive, assuming the pricing situation in the U.S. was similar to that in Australia.

The original Mac Classic and Mac LC were both very expensive to buy with a factory fitted Apple hard disk. It was much cheaper to buy a floppy drive only Mac and install a third party hard drive. Most dealers gave customers the option of buying a Mac with a genuine Apple disk or a third party disk (in many cases, the same model Quantum disk that Apple used but without the Apple ROM).

Some less scrupulous dealers fitted a third party hard drive, charged full price and pocketed the difference for themselves. Sigh.
