I have a Mac Classic that suffered some battery leakage, damaged capacitors and the Y1 oscillator broken. I have cleaned up the board a bit and replaced the capacitors and am replacing the oscillator tomorrow. Should this fix the board (its currently showing a chequerboard screen when turned on)?

I'm pretty sure you need that oscillator, but it might not be enough to restore the board to working condition. Classics tend to have a lot of capacitor leakage, from those I have seen. You may still need to wash the board and replace the rest of the caps, if you didn't replace all of them. It might work after just the oscillator though, give it a try.

Even if there wasn't battery leakage, all the aluminum can capacitors would have to be replaced because the electolytic fluid leaks out. The procedure is to remove the old caps, remove all socketed components (ram, rom, etc), then wash the board in distilled water and a small amount of liquid dish soap by soaking and agitating a bit. In order to help dry the board, you can rinse with isopropyl alcohol, though it's an optional step. Blow out the sockets with canned air to help get the water out. Then let it dry for a few days with a fan blowing on it. Then install the new capacitors.
Normally people wash the board with the capacitors removed in order to wash the goo off from underneath them. But in your case, I guess you'll just wash with the capacitors still on, since it doesn't make sense to remove them again.

I was thinking the checkerboard was a good sign that the battery leakage wasn't too extensive. But bibilit has a good point. Caroline, maybe you should post a high res photo of the affected area.
I may have an extra Classic board if you need parts. I'll be cleaning out some closets on December 12 so if you still need a part by then, I'll let you know what I find.
