mac SE won't boot, mac classic 2 with horizontial lines in the left and right corner.

So i haven't yet opened either machine but on the back of the SE theres this opening and there appears to be some sort of dial but it doesn't move its metal too thick to be change and im wondering if thats supposed to be there.

The mac classic II boots but i have the two horizontal lines when the machine powers on and then nothing else displays on the screen. this model i know used to work so im wondering if its some sort of horizontal control that got flipped or broken.

Pics included.

On the SE, this is an anti-theft device (Kensington type)

Won’t prevent the rear casing from been removed.

The Classic, hope this is not a battery leak damage, Logic board won’t survive.

and i meant vertical lines. i haven't yet opened the machine. odd that the classic doesn't have that little metal piece must of fallen out. the se was my brothers and get got it from school so it would make sense they had that lock.

as i say it used to work. when i say used to i mean about 5-7 years ago. so this tells me its not a lost cause. if i do open these how do i avoid killing myself?

ok got it opened now im afraid to touch anything.i had it on the floor and it rolled over and something sizzled. idk if that was the crt or if something fried.

the analog board was loose im not sure if it fell off when i was trying to open the case or if that is the reason why the screen didn't work. and theres 2 scsi cables and a molex connector that are just loose i have two floopy drives so shouldnt those be connected?

That first image you posted makes it look like the nipple has broken off the back of the CRT. Is there a hole on the end of that tube where the bent pins are? If so, that tube is toast. Thankfully, they are all pretty interchangeable; you should be able to find a dead compact Mac for cheap that you can scavenge the CRT out off, though.

From what you have described, I think the CRT in this computer is (semi)-officially toast. The sizzle you heard was likely the sound of air rushing into the (no-longer) vacuum-sealed CRT. The pins look extremely bent out of shape, and I doubt that whatever event bent all of the CRT pins would not have also broken the small glass seal at the very end of the CRT tube. This computer can likely still be repaired, but you might need to find another CRT to use inside of it.

It is possible this didn't happen, (the picture is blurry so there is a small chance) but from what I can make out in the blurry image, this CRT probably is depressurized, and will no longer function.

Someone on the forum might have a spare CRT they are willing to sell you, so not all hope is lost. :)

I think with some very careful repair work, this Mac SE could be brought back to life.

Yes, the CRT is dead there. You will need a replacement. Was the cable from the analog board to the logic board disconnected when you opened it as in the photo, or did you do that?

im not sure if it fell off when i was opening it or if it was like that. im starting to think maybe this is a project im not equiped for. if anyone wants this i'd be willing to sell it.

also im not sure what state its in. this was my brothers machine and while i dont remember him ever taking it apart someone obviously has. the machine did appear to boot when i tried to turn it on there was just no picture so maybe its fine.

well im a bit afraid to discharge it. i mean i know how to and have the tools im just scared to try.
I think the CRT probably is probably already discharged at this point, as it is no longer really connected to the analog board. It is good to be cautious around CRTs because they are very delicate, but I think the main risk is probably not there at this point. Of course, it wouldn't hurt to go through the discharge procedure regardless of this. There are lots of good tutorials online that can help with this as well.

As I said before, I think that there is a very good chance that the computer could still be repaired. Otherwise, there are lots of useful spare parts inside that I'm sure other people here would be interested in buying from you.

As far as my understanding of the screens in these computers goes, the only way for much of anything to appear would be to have the video board connected to the back of the CRT. As your first post had a picture of something on the screen, the video board was likely at least semi-connected when you turned the machine on. The CRT definitely was not yet depressurized when there was still an image visible onscreen.

I'd be interested in the logic board in almost any condition, as long as the battery has not leaked all over it. These parts are getting rather hard to come by, and I have a Classic in otherwise good shape that is just missing its logic board. If you'd rather not deal with taking the machine further apart than this, I understand too.

ah you want the classic. this is the SE im talking about. i havent opened the classic yet. the classic i know for sure works and im not really convinced its a blown cap because i was able to use the machine for awhile. maybe it blew right when i powered it on but ill see tomorrow.

i did some research and those lines usually mean a blown cap. as i said im not convinced of this yet im thinking maybe something is either loose or maybe some issue with the screen.

the SE never had a picture i turned it on today im not sure how long it sat but its been 20+ years for sure.

if you want the classic im willing to send you the whole thing if you only want the board ill see what i can find out tomorrow and ill post more then. its bed time now and i spent too much time today with the SE. it took a really long time to get it opened for some reason i had to use some opening tools.

@davidg5678 i took a new photo for some reason i was having an issue with auto focus on this camera but i think this should be clear.
