Mac SE 800k

I have a 1987 model SE with one 800k internal drive and a 120 MB internal hard drive.

I would like to switch the 800k floppy drive out with a 1.44 floppy drive that I pulled from a working Centris 650.

Is this siomply a matter of switching them out or do I need to do something else?

More people will chime in but I believe there was an upgrade kit that involved more than just a drive swap. I don't believe it's possible to just switch the drives.

Yea -- you can't. I know you have to drop in chips from an SE FDHD. In fact, I think the drive will work, but will only read 800k disks without the appropriate chips from the newer model.

The upgrade requires the replacement of three chips -- 2 ROMs, and 1 floppy controller chip (the "IWM" chip gets replaced by a SWIM chip). This trio of parts is rarely found in the wild these days. It's far easier to find an SE FDHD parts machine, and scavenge its organs.
