Tonight i went for a walk, and after half an hour noticed something familiar lying off the road.

It was this:

A Macintosh Classic II, pretty yellow and dusty.

I picked it and took it home, nice conquest isn't it ?

Well, the problem is how many people would care about a very old computer, probably not working and without any value ?

Anybody, except all of you, me...and those who don't care about a computer but are looking for something valuable inside:

Copper !!!

So that's the point, the screen is smashed, bezel as well and pieces and bits are all over the place.

Now the good news:

* Both boards seems to be ok (logic board is drying after a good wash)

* The Mac has never been cracked open (until this night of course) :b&w:

* The hard Disk is working (tested with my IIsi) System 7.1, with some nice applications (RamDoubler, Word, and Mac Playboy ...this is really hot)

* The floppy drive is working too

* A set of two sticks of ram are included (don't know the size right now)

So i have removed everything i will need in the future...as i will probably get a Classic soon, and swap boards :)

I also collected two more things:

Dusty isn't it

And the top cover of an Apple II europlus, yes only the cover :'(

Well, just gotta look at is for what it is and not what it could have been. You got some good parts between the boards and the drives.

Plus maybe that hole can be neatened up a bit and the case can be turned into something interesting? if nothing else maybe chop off the front, leaving about half an inch where it curves back, and hang it on the wall and call it art. Maybe put a clock where the screen would have been? I'm not that creative, I guess. But I bet something cool could be done with it.

.....are people really that desperate for a bit of copper. really? its like the people who steal phone cabling, or CATV equipment out of the ground or off the poles. So cheap. :-/

Perhaps try to convert that Classic into a not-aio mac?

Never underestimate the stupidity and desperateness of some people. If they had taken the whole thing and sold it as-is (before damaging it) on eBay they'd have made way more than whatever copper they got from it. That would have required intelligence, which is something copper thieves often seem to lack.

I work security on a 22 acre property with nine unoccupied buildings in the beginning stages of being remodeled. It's amazing the amount of work and time people will put into stealing such a small amount of Cat-5 cable, or a few pounds of copper pipe. I've even seen ancient lead pipes cut and stolen. I hope whoever took the hacksaw to that one was taking some deep breaths without wearing any kind of mask.

I once lived very close to a electric substation. The suspended lines from the substation to an abandoned paper mill were all taken one night. So that means they had to get them off the poles, climb the barbed wire topped fence to cut the unused lines from the live wires, etc. The substation could be seen from a well traveled road as well. That took some knowledge and guts, but I'm amazed they weren't caught in the act.

Then there's whatever scrap yard didn't ask any questions on what was probably a pickup truck full of power lines that likely didn't ask any questions...

Sorry to go off topic, just one of those things that annoys me. If you read the whole thing, thanks for letting me vent. If your eyes glazed over and you started scrolling and skimming, I don't blame you. :p

I was just thinking, imagine the same treatment to something not so usual...i will say a Lisa for instance

Pfft. If you're gonna steal metal, do it like a pro. We had some people in my area stealing light poles and selling the aluminum. They were worth about $400 each in raw materials.
Morons got caught because their license plate fell off after they pulled one of the poles out using a chain.

It looks like a perfect candidate for one of those color tube SVGA screens that are too deep to fit inside - you already have the hole in the back started.

Please upload your pictures (in future) to 68kmla using the "Upload attachment" tab below the message entry box. Offsite images have a habit of disappearing.

Here's the early stages of Trash80toHP_Mini's version:

Looking at that now, it occurs to me that the overhang gives the plugs underneath it a bit of protection from being shoved up against a wall - and that the whole Mac probably doesn't take up any more deskspace as a consequence.

I have one with a crack in the back like that myself. I was thinking of putting a car CD/radio/MP3 player in the back, a half-rack width mixer and effects unit, a battery in the bottom and a speaker in the front monitor bezel :D If you wanted to build an LCD/MiniITX media center, the back hole would be a perfect place for a subwoofer.
