LocalTalk Networking

Dammit, lets do this! This summer I'm gonna devote a huge amount of space to trying to get the rest of my apple machines networked.

Alright, so what do we got here?

-We got a Mac 512K with System software 2.0 and Finder 4.1. It currently has no Appleshare running on it and I have no idea how to add it on such a resource limited mac.

-We got a Macintosh Plus with System 6.0.8 but again, the appleshare software didn't seem to install when I setup the rest of the system. No idea how to add it.

-We have a Macintosh SE running System 7.1 which for now is networked so that's not one of my problem machines.

-We have an SE/30 running System 7.5.5 which is currently running on the LocalTalk network but a cat5 connection is plugged in the back as well so I can connect to a temporary server in the basement and grab disk images and generate floppies.

-We have an Apple IIgs with GS/OS 6.0.1 but no idea how to use it with Appleshare, if at all. I seem to recall it has the workstation card integrated but if I recall you can only use it if you netboot, right?

-We have that Apple IIe. Again, we got a workstation card but no idea how to make it behave with Appleshare, if it can.

-We have a Powerbook 180 running System 7.1. It's networked but It's only there because I wanted to use all my localtalk cabling.

-We have not pictured an Apple Workgroup Server 95 running System 7.6 and I'm working on installing Appleshare Server 3 on it as to give me the almost complete mac server environment, including the ability to netboot systems over the network.

All in all save for one Localtalk box and cable I've reserved for my LaserWriter I'm up and running and ready to grab files off the internet and generate disk images if necessary.

So regarding the four bolded machines above, what should be my first move?

With System 6, are you using Font/DA Mover to install AppleShare AND going to the Chooser to turn on Apple Talk?

No because I have not manually installed any Appleshare software and no Appleshare is not present in the Chooser.

Dammit, my old enemy Slot assignments. Slot 7 is the Appletalk card but slot 7 is also where my Vulcan controller resides. You enable appletalk and you can no longer boot until you unplug the battery.

Edited: Right, You can select which slot to start from using the same control panel. Moved the Vulcan to slot 5 and conttinuing with Appleshare setup. I wonder why I didn't set this up before....

Edited: omg, I can't use that slot either or else the 3.5" floppy stops working.

Efdited: There's literally no way to expand this machine without disabling part of it. wtf?

Alright, so sacrificing my modem port I moved the vulcan to slot 2 so that Appletalk can use slots 1 and 7. My CP/M card was moved to slot 5 because when I need to toggle it on I don't need access to the 3.5" drive. I also installed the Appleshare files and now I can see and mount remote volumes over Appleshare. This machine is now done.

Also worth noting slot assignments are not remembered without a battery, so a new one was taped under the PSU and off the main logic board.

Now that leaves us with the plus and the 512k.

...and it seems I missed adding Appleshare when I installed 6.0.8 on the Plus, so now that is installed and it can see the server as well. So that leaves the 512k.

As mentioned before it has a system disk with system software 2.0 and Finder 4.1. It seems that to run Appleshare you need the Appleshare Workstation 1.1 diskette to update your system disk and thus let you connect to any servers.

Someone here asked about it ten years ago. Someone pointed to one of the old download lists and with some Wayback Machine magic I was able to reach the files in question, create the Workstation floppy and update my system disk with it. So now all the machines are on the network, except the Apple IIe.

I've always assumed the workstation card was exclusively for use by netbooting but apparently you CAN also use it for connecting to Appleshare servers as well.

Thing is, I do not have the 3.5" floppy that comes with the workstation card, so I can't even try splitting the files up amongst a bunch of 5.25" disks. Does anyone know where to find that?

Blimy, I'm blind!

I was looking over that page earlier this afternoon and totally missed the link. Okay well I'll give that a try tomorrow.

Jesus almighty christ, why is BINscii so hard to get working?

For the love of god it even comes with instructions.

CelGen, if you have a ROM 01 IIgs, you can move the Vulcan to slot 1 or 2 since they have to be set to "Your Card" in order for the AppleTalk firmware to use that corresponding serial port. If its a ROM 3, you can still use slot 7 for the Vulcan, just set Slot 1 or 2 to "AppleTalk".

If you want to take all the Localtalking to the next level, you gotta find one of those fancy Ethernet bridges :p

One thing which needs clarified in this discussion: AppleShare is NOT something added via the Chooser. AppleShare is a "Chooser Extension" and is dropped into the System Folder under System 6 (or the Extensions folder in System 7). The Chooser needs added to the Apple Menu, which is what you need Font/DA Mover for under System 6.

There are a few other goodies you'll want under System 6:

--The Responder INIT. It isn't mandatory, but I always include it. Certain programs do call for it, but the odds of you using those programs aren't very high. I'd stick it in regardless since it's tiny, probably something like 5K max on the disk.

--The Access Privileges DA. Again, not mandatory, but good to have.

--Backgrounder. This is needed for background printing on your LaserWriter. If you aren't going to use this on your Sixers, feel free to leave it (and PrintMonitor) out.

--Laser Prep. You need this with the LaserWriter driver under System 6 and earlier. This will also be needed on your 512K.

I run an entire network of old Macs running System 6, all of which are connected to a System 7 Mac. (However, I also have a copy of AppleShare 3.0 sitting around, and I'm thinking of installing it on an SE/30 for those days when I want to leave the Performa 575 at home--I do take these on the road and 575s aren't the best passengers). It's honestly not too bad to set up, run, and maintain.
