Hello people

Looks like ill be getting my first Lisa with keyboard  but no mouse

question - will a mouse from a mac 128K work on a Lisa ?

cheers

YES.

It's not the "proper" one but that'll do.
Not always...

Early Lisa motherboards used a funky 9 pin connector with little tabs top and bottom and no nuts:

To use a mac mouse with these systems you can remove the outer shell of the connector on the motherboard (or cut off the tabs) and optionally add the hold down nuts.

For later Lisa systems the mac mouse is the "proper" one.

Ooh. Didn't know that. I stand corrected.

So was the original Lisa Mouse still packaged with the 2/10? It's a bit confusing.

oooh!  That is my question too, were the later Lisa's and Mac XL's all equipped with the 'original' Lisa mouse?

I really don't know exactly when Apple made the transition to the Mac mouse on the Lisa.  I believe that all Lisa 1 systems used the Lisa mouse, many of these were converted into Lisa 2's.  Early factory made Lisa 2's also used the Lisa mouse for sure.  Later Lisa 2/10 models (AKA Mac XL's) use the mac mouse.  Of my 3 Lisa systems, one 2/5 has a Lisa mouse, one 2/5 has a mac mouse, and my 2/10 has standard DB9 connector a Mac mouse.   My 2/5 with the Mac mouse still has the special connector for the lisa mouse the the outer shell removed and hold-down nuts.  I believe is came from Apple that way.

Electrically, the Lisa and the mac mouse are the same, and in the early mac days is was common for mac users to use the Lisa mouse on the mac.

Thanks for the replies folks.

Its my first Lisa ,  a Lisa2 (macintosh xl) - not working - should be delivered next week

Ive recapped many macs, is there any major 'DO NOT's' with a Lisa,  any heads up's on what NOT to do

Plan to take is apart, inspect, clean and possibly try to turn it on.......unless......

will post some pics when it gets here!

cant wait to see it !!!......   her!

weh hey

Identify what version of Lisa 2 you have:  A Lisa 2/5 with 3 DB25 ports on the back or a Lisa2/10 with only 2 DB25 ports on the back.

Check the the label on the PS and verify that it's the correct 110 or 220 version correct for your area.

If you have a Lisa 2/10 then just try to power her up, you can do no wrong.

If you have a Lisa 2/5 then first open the back cover and verify the batteries have been removed from the I/0 board.  If they are there remove them immediately and most likely you will have a major corrosion issue to fix.  If the batteries are not there then look for corrosion on the board in the lower right corner.  If it's clean ( doubtful ), then try to power her up.

Your floppy drive will most likely need to be serviced (cleaned and lubed), and your keyboard will need to be rebuilt with new pads.

If you have 2/10, the HD may sound like a 747 taking off (this is normal), but don't be surprised if it does not work, if it does, catastrophic failure is imminent.

Good luck.

Rick

Thanks for the info Rick

I have a drawer full of batteries I have removed from my 68k macs. Does the Lisa use the same type - like the maxwell battery - thats will be the first thing to do - God i hope it hasnt leaked all over the place

Not the same.

(technically Macs use a single cell, the Lisa uses a multi cell "battery" that is is soldered to the IO board)

See here:

And hope it's already been removed, and not leaked it's innards all over your boards. Can be hard to recover from that. If it is by chance still in there, cut it out right away!

If it's a later XL, you might have the newer I/O board that didn't include the battery.

Untrue.

You can use a regular mac mouse in a Lisa 1 or Lisa 2/5 as-is. There's no nuts to fasten it to but it fits snug enough it won't fall out while using it.

Unless every Lisa I've seen has already had the port modified.
