Large Box 'o' Laptops

Long time coming this box was originally promised to me a year ago. I got an email last week saying that it was finally out of storage and ehre is what I picked up today:

Powerbook G3 Lombard - 400mhz/?MB/0GB/DVD - Comes with a spare logic board. 1 is good, 1 is not...not sure which is which.

Powerbook 3400c 180mhz/144MB/1.3GB/CD

Powerbook 3400c ?mhz/144MB/?GB/CD - Not Booting properly. Has tape on it with 'Suspect PowerBoard'

Powerbook 3400c ?mhz - Taken Completly Apart. Motherboard is apparently good, has a 16MB RAM card.

Powerbook G3 Kanga - Bad Powerboard or something. Turns on but Whines quite badly. Apparently it destroys Hard Drives.

Powerbook 1400c - No idea of the CPU or RAM and apparently it gets a line on the LCD at boot but it goes away. No CD, battery or floppy.

Powerbook 170 - No idea what it has inside. No Power adapter means no testing

Powerbook 190cs - Not tested yet. Looks complete.

Powerbook 520 - Case is very beat up 20MB RAm/500MB HD. Screen is almost broken off. 1 Hinge broken

Powerbook 520c 12MB/320MB - Works and case is decent.

Powerbook 540c 20MB/250MB - Works and LCD is a little discoloured but okay otherwise.

Stylewriter - No Power adapter

Box of 3400 Batteries and floppies.

Now I just have to go through it all!

This box has given me a lot of projects.

Project 1:

So I found out the 1400c was a 117mhz by the CPU. It did not boot but it was missing all the RAM. I plan to move the LCD to a known working logic board and bottom case.

Project 2:

Replace the logic board in the bad 3400c with the possibly working one. Messy I think.

Project 3:

Replace the logic board in the Lombard.

Project 4:

Gut the 520. It is in very poor shape case wise but it still booted. Good for parts.

Project 5:

See to fixing that Kanga. Doubt there is much I can do for it but one can hope.

I forgot to mention there was a Bookendz by NewerTec in the box for a lombard.

Nice. The 400MHz logic board includes the hardware DVD decoder. And the Bookendz dock is a sweet bonus.

You know the CPU modules are interchangeable, right? And you can upgrade the 520s to 33MHz for a buck apiece. Heck, get spares and see if you can upclock them

It Came from someone who used to restore them and send them to the Philippines. These were what was left over and would have gone to the recyclers if I did not take them. He has other computers that he is going to let me know about down the road.

They are. I should buy one for the 520c as it is in Okay shape. The 520 is pretty much a writeoff. The hinge for the screen on one side is completely broken off the case and there is missing front plastic on the 520. I consider it parts. Not bad considering there is a 500MB SCSI drive in there.

Either way, my wife rolled her eyes and sighed when I told her about this box.

Also, anyone know where I can find a really cheap power adapter for a 170?

The fact that its missing all its RAM is irrelevant - all PB1400s have 8MB soldered onboard, in addition to an extra 4 or 8MB in the Apple RAM slot.

Yeah, I've taken apart my lombard before. Luckily I had a great repair guide to follow.
