I picked up a LaCie 4GB external SCSI drive at the hamfest as i got the other drives from.
It looked like it had been opened before, so i pulled it all the way apart to inspect. besides a seized fan, everything looked fine.
I fired it up, and sounded like the HDD was wanting to spin, but it would not. it was trying. but not.
So i tried another power source to make sure it wasnt the power supply of the case itself, same thing.
So with nothing to loose, i decided to take the cover off on the HDD to free up the platter from the heads. it was stuck as i suspected, so i freed it manually and checked for any head damage and there was none. i have done this with quantum vikings before with great success.
So, After freeing the platter, i put the drive back together and lid back on and gave it a first power up. It spun up and passed the power on seek test. as i knew it would ;-)
Fired up the SE/30 and drive, it loaded a "silverlining" driver at startup when i first turned the mac on. So this means the system area or negative tracks were readable by the drive, and the hard disk driver was also readable.
after it booted all the way, it popped up an alert that i needed system software newer than what i had in order to mount and view the volume (silverlining message).
i just clicked eject at the unreadable prompt. Then the factory ORIGINAL LaCie utilites partition mounted. has all the silverlining utilities and stuff, including the disk image to make the utilities diskette.
So not only does the HDD work, but the silverlining LaCie utilities partition is still present.
So anyone saying that taking the cover off an HDD kills it, its purely a "Myth" and its busted. The only thing is, you cannot power up the HDD with the lid removed. otherwise, it cannot create the correct air bearing and will damage the head as the platter spins up. With the lid on, it can build pressure and allow the heads to "float" They are enamel coated to protect against platter rub, but its only coated so thick. So if you run with the lid off, it will cause the coating to wear off, then it'll tear the coil winding on the head. Then you get the click of death
anyone need any of this stuff? I can make a disk image of the partition and stuff it.
