"Invisible item" in control panel System 7.5.5

Hey guys,

I'm having this super annoying problem at the moment. I downloaded MacTCP, and when I try to drag it into my Control Panel, I get the message:

"You cannot move MacTCP to the folder Control Panel, because an invisible item with the same name already exists in this location"

Is there a way for me to unhide this invisible item? Or to delete it or something? I have tried searching for "MacTCP", but nothing is found.

When I try to run MacTCP from another folder, my whole system freezes, so apparently I can't do anything until I have solved this problem.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

you may need to run norton disk doctor, because there could be a problem, or even run an antiviral scanner of some sorts. The problem with these early file systems, is they never stay consistent without errors. kinda like FAT and FAT32 was when you abruptly powered it off.

I agree with techknight. I would also consider setting up, if possible under the circumstance, an FTP server on the affected machine using the brilliant and now free NetPresenz. This will allow any computer to connect to the host machine via FTP (careful it is not the most secure FTP any longer, not even sure if it does SFTP but that's besides the point here). You might be able to use the client computer to search for and delete affected file if it really exists.

As per your report though, I would suspect techknight is correct.

I don't know how off I am way off on this next suggestion but with the knowledge I have at this time I would also be rebuilding the desktop and/or starting up with the shift key (extensions off) just to understand if there is a conflict or mild corruption causing the issue. I apologize but offhand I do not know if a desktop rebuild is appropriate under the circumstance because I don't know what the rebuild specifically address so that might not be a valid solution.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like you have Open Transport installed? Use ResEdit to make the item visiable, then remove it from the system folder.

Hey, sorry for the delayed response, and thanks a lot for the suggestions!

The solution suggested by ktkm sounded like the least effort, as I already have ResEdit installed, so I thought I would give it a shot. After making MacTCP visable with ResEdit, I was able to delete it from my Contol Panel. I did have Open Transport installed at some point, but I thought I removed it. I ran the uninstall for OT again, and after it completed, I could successfully move MacTCP to the control panel.

After doing this, my SE/30 happily connected to the internet for the first time [:D] ]'>

Thanks a lot for the help
