intro project

Hello all, new to this ;D

I have had my PowerBook 145b for a little less than a year now, and I have only just realized what sort of power(!?) i had ;D

At the moment, I am working on re-installing macos 7.0.1, then upgrading to 7.5.3 (and then to 7.5.5). After, hopefully i will recieve my Asante Micro, to get ethernet, and then get a wireless access point to get wireless capability. I cant wait to walk into the local coffee shop with this old thing ;)

anyway, cheers til then.

Well, I don't know how portable that setup is, but I'm glad your excited and pursuing it. :)

Welcome to 68kmla.

Sounds like a great plan. Last year sat in a pub typing on my PowerBook 145b and got a few funny looks from people. I don't know whether it was because it was such a retro-looking machine or the fact that I was working on my computer in a pub. ;)

I own a (Beat Up) 145B. Its great with all the ports on it. I might try to even record songs off my iPod and onto the thing for fun.

regarding portability, i agree. I am currently looking for ways to get a wireless bridge to run off a battery. (if anyone knows how, or of a bridge that does, let me know pls?) And of course replacement of the 2-minute battery is a must, along with the CMOS battery. I am dreading taking it apart, I have to find a flippin hex screwdriver somewhere. another plus to that tho, I also have a modem from a 165 around here somewhere, so while its open i might as well slip that in there. :D

Opening these up is not too bad. Compared to opening up an ibook, it's a breeze. Just get yourself a torx-9 (8?) driver, and you'll be fine.

I'm very interested in how you intend to get wireless working with that 'book. The only wireless I'm aware of was Digital Ocean's Grouper (I happen to have a couple). Not WiFi, unfortunately, but at least it allows you to go tetherless for the brief period of time that the batteries hold out...

Sounds like he's going to use a wireless bridge, so he'll have an ethernet cable from the Asante Micro to the bridge which will make the wireless link.

I don't know of any that are battery powered. I'd imagine most are 12V (my netgear is 12V) or 6V so you could get a rechargeable gell cell and a barrel plug that fits the bridge and run it off of that. What's another object sitting there at this point?!?

Or, how does the Asante Micro get it's power? Maybe you can tap that, or something off the laptop.

true there.

The Asante pulls power from the ADB port, so im not so sure about that. But i agree about the battery cell. Ill have to look into that.

I gotcha by 20 cents :D btw, does anyone know how long 4200mAh lasts? :?:

If that website doesn't carry the battery (Happened to me on a different site) and didn't update the site I ordered the battery from that site. As for the capacity, on my PowerBook 150 I get around 2-4 hours depending on what power saving options are on.

thanks for the info. :)

Oh, I just want to ask. What do you plan on doing (Or websites you want to see) from the PowerBook 145B? And what OS do you have on there? I think it would be great for FTP sites and some basic (VERY BASIC) websites.

I mostly am going to be doing programming or such on it. As far as what sites, it'll depend on what i'm doing at the moment :D Im gonna put netscape 4.8 on it for browsing.

Currently running System 7.0.1, and I haven't decided yet weather I want to upgrade to 7.5.5. Earlier I was convinced, but i found some new info that said 7.0.1 was a better choice. Since we're on the subject, does anyone have any suggestion on which way to go?

I have also thought about running linux on it, but im gonna try out macOs first. :D

I have 7.5.3 on mine and it does not run too well. I recommend getting RAM Doubler (PM Me if you need it) to speed things up a bit. Go for 7.0.1. I hear Linux is a pain to get on and run (You can forget about a GUI but I can be wrong). Mac OS is fine for the thing.

I recommend sticking with 7.0.1 unless there's some critical software that requires something higher. Those 'books have limited RAM, so you want to run the least-demanding (in terms of RAM footprint) OS version. And, needless to say, disable any unneeded bits that eat into your precious RAM.

Netscape 4.8 will be painful. I recommend going no higher than version 3 (and even 2.2 may be worth a try). Also, since rendering images is slow anyway, you may want to load up wannabe 68k as well. Since it is a text-only browser, it flies. It will require 7.1, at minimum, however. As 7.1 is not available for download from Apple, you can produce an equivalent from 7.5.3, using Gamba's procedure (see home.earthlink.net/~gamba2).

I hope you have a full 8MB of RAM. If not, you're in for unhappy days.

As far as RAM goes, I was going to allocate some Virtual Memory for a total of 12 MB RAM. I have RAM Doubler installed now, but when I am using VM it is disabled anyway. I am planning on wiping the whole disk, and doing a clean install, and choosing which programs should go on there and writing my own later.

As far as Netscape 4.8, the info i got from some site (i forget which) said that you're able to choose what components to install, so that was the reason I was going with it.

I'm sure you have choices, but I think you'll find that you don't have as much flexibility as you thought. Even a minimum configuration is likely to consume quite a bit more RAM than 3.x (or 2.2). There's no harm in giving it a shot, of course, so by all means try the experiment; just be prepared for disappointment. :)
