Good catch!  ;D

So, the SE sorta boots and then it "crashes" and you have the weird artefacts on top of the checkerboard pattern, right? That's odd.

Have you removed the PRAM battery? Those things age very badly and they can kill a Mac. The SE will work fine without it. (it won't keep time but the battery is probably already dead...). It won't fix your problem but it certainly doesn't need it.

One of my SEs is currently dead because the battery exploded before I got it. It boots to the checkerboard. I really hope your battery bomb hasn't gone off yet!

The checkerboard problem :simasimac:  is usually bad or badly seated ROMS and/or SWIM. Take the Mac apart, and carefully remove those 3 large chips labelled ROM HI, ROM LOW and IWM or SWIM on the logic board. Clean the pins with alcohol or with sand paper (if required) and put them back on again. Make a note of which one's which before removing them to make your life easier.  |)

Dust can cause such problems, but so does the damn Maxell! (you'll hear a lot about this thing here...)

All three have new saft brand PRAM batteries, Macintosh SE has a new 4MB samsung ram kit, new caps on logic board, I have every new cap for analog board including the panasonic 3.9uf but haven't put them in yet, all rom chips were reseated and cleaned with isopropyl alcohol, the board is the older 4mb max type and was washed in water (without battery) and cleaned with alcohol too. All of the Macs had tadiran brand batteries. I also have all caps for LC475 and ill install them before recapping the rest of the SE. Ill post pictures of the new caps and everything soon.

I double checked to see if I uploaded upside down pictures, the original files weren't upside down, I wonder why they came out that way.

I forgot to say, the mac boots into desktop just fine and stays that way, some times it doesn't chime and come up with a checkerboard pattern.

Here are some pictures of when I first got it, when half of the case colour was restored, my bad looking cap replacement (before new ram) and the desktop. Now they appear to be rotated 90 degrees instead of upside down for some reason.
