iMac Intel freebee

Someone that works for the local dump trashpicked an iMac. I still dont know much about it yet, other than the screen is cracked. But I noticed it started up very quickly to a login screen which is mostly hidden beyond the modern-art of cracked-ness. but the HDD is there and boots nevertheless. it looks in good shape. no cracks or dings. just very dirty from being in the trash.

I looked on the bottom, it said iMac 17"/2.0/1GB/160gb/BT/AP/SD or something like that. The copyright said 2006. So this must be an Intel! Here I thought it was a G5 but i could be wrong.

2006 was intel. early 2006 they had coreduo, mid-late 2006 (my mom's) was core2duo. I know this as the last G5 was 2005. And they didn't ship with 1GB RAM, nor BT/AP/SD standard.

I believe the options for 2006 if mid-late 2006 would've been 1.83Ghz/2.0Ghz

G5's were 1.6/1.8/2.1ghz I think but they shipped with between 256-512MB RAM standard.

EDIT: has to be core2duo, january 2006 is when the intel imacs came out. and I don't think 17" were available in coreduo editions, only 20"

Also, G5's were 2.1Ghz, not 2.0Ghz

Whoa! Nice save... Sounds like you could tuck it behind an external monitor as an extra cheap fix. I bet you can get parts here or eBay without breaking the bank and have yourself a decent iMac on the cheap.

17-inch and 20-inch versions were available with Intel Core Duos right from the start. I have two.

Cracked screen 'eh? Sounds like a perfect candidate for a UniMac conversion... I plan to install one of the high resolution displays to my display-less 17-inch Core 2 Duo model when the funds become available. Not as cheap as finding a donor unit or a second hand replacement screen, but certainly more reliable and still 3x cheaper than Apple's base price for a 17-inch LCD replacement.

I meant the 2.0Ghz version. Apple lists 1.83Ghz for coreduo 17" and up to 2.0Ghz for 20".
You could BTO faster CPUs in the 17-inch iMacs. I had a Core2 with a 2.16GHz chip in it. Not sure how important it was over a 2.0GHz (which was the stock config on the model I got) but at the time, I was incredibly into that extra 160MHz.

If it's the core2duo or coreduo whites, yes they are. I can confirm that. My mom's is and people talked about the coreduo being upgradeable by dropping a core2duo into it.

ok. Well tomorrow when I get off work i will rip this guy apart and see what it has. Curiosity is getting the better of me.

You should be able to slot a T7200 (1.83 GHz), T7400 (2.16 GHz) or T7600 (2.33 GHz) Core 2 Duo into there with no issues whatsoever. I used to have a 17" 1.83 GHz Core Duo iMac (T2400) that I upgraded with a T7400.
