iMac G5 Software Disks (more info included, see bottom)

Our iMac G5 came with software disks, as all Macintosh computers. I took the "Mac OS X Install Disk 1" disk and I put it into the G5 (which now runs 10.5.3). Inside I saw the Install Mac OS X and Bundled Software.

I popped in the same disk into my Beige G3 Tower (OS 9.2.2) and it popped up and the Install Mac OS X and Bundled Software icon looks the same. When I open it (to try to install OS X on it), it reads something like: "The alias 'Install Mac OS X and Bundled Software' cannot be opened because the original cannot be found".

My question is, what can I do to make it work so I can intall OS X from that disk onto the Beige G3? Or is that disk exclusively for the iMac G5?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, the disk is exclusively for the iMac G5. All grey-colored Apple install discs are. You'll need a reatail 10.2 or 10.3 disc to install onto the beige G3. 10.3 will need XPostFacto to install.

Wait a minute....

Get XPostFacto and try the disk or if you just want toe apps find the terminal command to enable hidden files and look through the packages you want installed.

If you just want the apps, use Pacifist. I've done this with older OS X 10.2 OEM discs in order to get AppleWorks to convert a document from .wrk to .doc and I was able to extract it from the install discs using Pacifist.

I managed to get ahold of a Panther disk (thanks to one of my pals). When I inset it everything is okay, but when I hit "Restart" so the installation can begin, it give me a message saying that the computer cannot select the disc as a start up disc (or file, I forget) error (-2). Does that mean I have to use XPostFacto to make it work? I tried it on both the iMac G3 and the Beige G3. Thanks!

If you just want to install the applications from the iMac G5 system disc unto the iMac G3, give Pacifist a try (the link is in my previous post).

If you're trying to install Tiger from the iMac G5 system discs, you won't be able to. As Cory5412 stated, those discs included with the Macs only work with those model Macs. You could probably install them on a million iMac G5s, but on nothing other than the same model iMac G5. The same is going to be the case with your friend's disc if the disc is an OEM disc and it's not the same model Mac as yours.

The disk is an Actual Panther (OS 10.3) disc and both computers give me that message saying that it can't take it as a start up disk. At the end of the explanation, it says error (-2).

I don't know why I brought up an iMac G3.... ::)
That's because I have an iMac G3 and an iMac G5.
I noticed that when I looked at your signature in trying to determine more about your Beige G3, but when I posted that particular comment I didn't...I just assumed you were talking about an iMac G3. :p

I should post more info about it (Mr. Beige). In the mean time i'll go and be frustrated about how to mount OS X on both of the machines.

I can't download XPostFacto onto the iMac. All it gives me when I hit "Download Now" (on every site) is a webpage full of text. Help?
