iMac auto HD spin down

I've noticed something lately. In the Energy Saver control panel of my iMac G3, I'm always sure to have Sleep Mode initiate if idle for 10 minutes. I have no power down time limit for the hard disk. However, if I type in SimpleText for too long, the computer remains on but the hard drive shuts off! I don't have a problem with this, but I'd still like to know why it does that automatically.

Any ideas?

System Preferences/Energy Saver/Sleep, and uncheck Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible. If you do not, a program that does not autosave its documents needs that you save them frequently (eg every five or ten minutes) so that the iMac does not consider its HDD to be idle, and therefore to spin it down.

You haven't mentioned your OS, but the above is true for OS 10.2.x, 10.3.x and 10.4.x. However, you mention SimpleText. Are you working in OS 9? If so, the settings are not as obvious, and you should look here and here.

Edit: Fixed the links! ~tl

The option in Energy Saver you have just mentioned is already unchecked.

But you're right, I lacked to mention the other info...I am on OS 9.2.1, but your links don't work. Would you mind describing where to go to fix this?

Thanks,
